We picked this one up in Brooklyn late last year. She has admitted to squatting in one of the old apartments on McKibbin St. (see attached.)
On the night of September 17th 2013 NYPD received a number of emergency phonecalls which led them to believe that two buildings on McKibbin St. were under siege by a violent gang from a neighbouring district. Residents reported strange figures in their homes and fresh cracks on the walls and ceilings. The area did have a history of criminal activity, but seemed to have turned itself around in recent years. Nevertheless, officers arrived on the scene prepared for the worst.
By the time they reached the building some of the floors had already begun to cave in and civilians were helping one another to evacuate their homes, nursing baffling injuries ranging from tiger bites to constriction and choking marks consistent with those of an octopus tentacle. Witnesses also attest to seeing shadowy dog-like creatures stalking the corridors and a range of other unsettling encounters were experienced by police who tried to enter the apartments. Once it became clear that a paranormal event was taking place the area was locked down and UNTIL specialists were brought in. So it was that the girl at the center of the disaster was apprehended.
What is now clear to us is that her abilities are in some way dependent on the manipulation of shadows. When placed in a room with powerful unobstructed ambient light her abilities seem unable to manifest and she displays no superhuman abnormalities or signs of mutation. Her known abilities are as follows:
- The ability to disappear into her own shadow and thus become a two-dimensional disembodied projection, with the added ability of being able to merge with existing shadows and traverse them across a room, or even into adjoining rooms. This seems to be her most developed skill and accounts for the difficulty we've had in keeping her contained.
- The ability to move distant objects, either through some unconventional form of telekinesis or by dint of her control over shadows in the object's vicinity - still unclear.
- The ability to manipulate shadowed spaces and matter to conform to her own conscious or unsconscious designs. The full extent and limits of this ability are unknown, as these manifestations only seem to occur on a subconscious level at present and in situations of high stress or induced sleep.
Note: What is also clear to us is that these abilities are largely out of her control. The events of September 17th are now thought to have occured when the subject was asleep and further studies have revealed that this is when she is at her most dangerous, being able to maintain some control when in a conscious and lucid state of mind.
Experts from Project Mind Game have concluded with some certainty that her powers are not derived from any kind of psionic or telepathic ability, as the monsters that surround her when her powers are most active are patently real in every observable sense of the word and don't display the common nuances of simple mental constructs. Specialists are now eager to investigate the possibility that they are dimensional in origin, but the subject has shown some distress in response to being confined and so it is that with great trepidation we have decided to release her.
I recommend that she be placed under constant observation by an experienced agent (perhaps one of the #####s once they're back from their assignment) for her own protection and the protection of those around her.
P.S. I've flagged this one for consideration, you never know. The name that she gave us is Ebony, but we've been calling her Penumbra.
