Background
Misspent Youth
As a youth, R'zyld'na was a street urchin living in the cramped bowels of a dingy but thriving criminal space station, the adopted daughter of a Vrynian tavern wench who Roz mostly just remembers as having eight arms to spank with. She probably misremembers even that, because although those cephalopoid aliens have eight undifferentiated "arms", they usually use the rearmost two exclusively as legs. Young Roz spent most of her time stealing to get by (fair's fair, after all - most of the crews passing through were thieves of one sort or another) and lording her regal greenness and quick reflexes over the other station brats her age. Until they finally had enough of her.
To escape the punchy wrath of her peers, the scrappy green girl stowed away on board the pirate ship Deathcutter, commanded by the feared and loathed Dread Pirate Rogar, a massive, fearsomely-jowled Ploonian famed for terrorizing merchant crews into surrendering without firing a shot. As the young stowaway showed bravery and spunk in managing to drop the crew's least-favorite grunt, a crabby Gadroon, with a swift kick to the jibbleez (and perhaps more impressively, had actually managed to locate a Gadroon's jibbleez), Rogar decided to take her on as his cabin maid, reasoning that he could always kill her as an example later.
Pirate Career
Despite the nightly threat to kill her in the morning, which eventually became an in-joke between them, the Dread Pirate Rogar never did execute her. Obviously. Within a few years, Roz had become his protégé, learning the secrets of effective and profitable piracy. Most important was the difference between seeming like a conscienceless, erratic, murderous villain and actually being one. Theft was profitable, while murder was not, and while they'd all be just as hung if they ever got caught, dead bodies tended to attract determined pursuit and massive bounties more than insurance bills.
"Y'see," he would tell her, in his voice that sounded more like a volcanic rumble, "Y'see, it's all about showing 'em who's boss. There's always this one tough guy, tries to be all defiant. Ya bring the hammer down on them, knock the wind out of 'em, break a few bones, pump 'em full of stunners, whatever, then you stand over 'em, get ready to bring down the killing blow, and then you lose interest. Let the crowd get a good look, let 'em know you're looking for the next entertainment. Then you got no volunteers. G'night now, I'll likely kill you in the morning."
Roz was a quick and eager student, and before long was manning a gunner's seat and joining in raids, taking the first trophies that would eventually grow into her vast gun collection. After one last big score, Rogar decided to retire, and Roz obligingly faked killing him in self defense. Now, Dread Pirate R'zyld'na, slayer of Rogar, was in command.
For two Earth decades, she roamed the spacelanes, following Rogar's wisdom and earning a reputation.
Not satisfied to just be his successor, however, she grew more and more daring, engaging in smash 'n grab heists of orbital facilities, directly attacking various government's customs forces, and pulling off pointless but high-profile antics like stealing a tourist planet's ring system to hold hostage.
Roz's thrill-seeking eventually got the better of her and her crew when she began to pick at the fringes of the still-mighty Malvan empire. Emboldened by a few barely-successful raids on backwater colonies and independent traders, she targeted a ship carrying the personal effects of the new Dorvalan ambassador to Malva and just barely escaped the honor guard instead. Pursued relentlessly by Malvan marshals and bounty hunters, Rosalind dropped her crew off in a series of minor shadow bases like her hometown, then faked her ship's destruction in orbit of the oddly primitive-yet-influential planet Earth.
Down to Earth
R'zyld'na's plan to seek asylum on Earth, or at least hide out for a while, was aided immensely by the hastily-aborted Qularr invasion of Milennium City mere days after her escape pod's splashdown in Lake Michigan. While being questioned by UNTIL, she offered to go out and fight the invaders with 'mere' human weaponry, figuring it wouldn't be that hard to squish a few bugs and play the hero. She was right, and she was able to keep a few blocks clear so that forces could be diverted elsewhere in the city.
In light of her service to humanity, R'zyld'na (eventually called 'Rosalind' by humans struggling to pronounce her name), was allowed to stay on Earth, protected from extradition, as long as she continued to fight against Earth's problems. Rosalind merrily dived into this 'privateer' role, and has been cheerfully sacking VIPER, ARGENT, Gadroon, and other villainous facilities ever since.
Arsenal
Guns Guns Guns
If it shoots something, Rosalind has stolen, looted, or bought it. Her affinity for energy weapons, firearms, and weapons that vaguely resemble firearms has lead the UN to classify her as a private army. In order to keep on the good side of her adopted homeworld, even the most archaic weapons in her arsenal have been modified for nonlethal effect through Advanced Alien Technology.
She also carries swords, largely as a fashion statement, though she does know which way the sharp end goes.
Zero-Point Grappler
Rosalind's trademarked* swinging style is enabled by the use of a zipline-tethered false vacuum resonance cavity configured to become an Immovable Object relative to the reference frame created by the strongest local gravitational acceleration. Warning: keep away from Unstoppable Forces.
- The United States Patent and Trademark Office has considered and formally rejected this trademark application.
Adaptive Armor
A cheap Vegan knockoff of Malvan Instant Wardrobe technology, Rosalind's armor can shrink to a thin bodysuit or - after absorbing a wrecked Black Talon suit, at least - grow into towering power armor. However, it is incapable of transforming itself into anything more fashionable, so she keeps a well-stocked wardrobe of more flattering garments made of high-strength materials as well.
New Crew
Of course, she can't well be a pirate captain without a crew, can she? After a recent clash with ARGENT, she managed to salvage enough robot parts to start assembling her new crew. She is, unfortunately, having difficulty teaching them to talk like proper pirates.
Connections
Rosalind largely swings through action with a low profile, still technically being a fugitive in civilized parts of the galaxy, but the heat's been off long enough that she's mingling openly again.
So far she's sailed with:
- Bloodmane and the Crew of the Drunken Monkey: Though she quickly lost touch with them, the time spent aboard was the best month of her life. Well, she guesses that it was, since she apparently consumed enough rum to forget most of it.
- Aliona: She's an unashamed fangirl of the The Galactic Siren's crowning work, Lament for a Fading Star, and once set the album on loop long enough that her crew threatened to mutiny if she didn't stop playing it. She was delighted to discover the star laying low on Earth as well.
Wanted Posters and other notes
Say things about Rosalind here! Her ego demands it!
Rumors, Lies, and Slander
These might be 'known' ICly, but are entirely false. Probably. Feel free to add more!
- Rosalind is actually much older than she lets on, and a drunken fling with half of Hollywood started the trend of green alien women in sci-fi.
- Rigelian physiology depends on alcohol like human physiology depends on water.
- Rosalind is actually a Rigelian princess fleeing assassins.
