CHILDHOOD
Jabari was born in 1846 on a small cotton plantation in South Carolina. Him and his parents were slaves, and despite being raised in a very hostile environment he grew up to be a healthy child. At 13 years of age he received his first flogging after being wrongly accused of taking fruit from a tree and eating it. The overseer whipped Jabari badly, and he was then left in the slave-house to recover or die. Miraculously his wounds had healed by the next day, but his parents had him pretend to be hurt for weeks to avert attention. It was then his parents realized Jabari had never been sick and when injured he healed quickly with no scars. Fearing that this trait would get him sold, they had Jabari stay close to them in the fields (where they all picked cotton) so that they could
