CHILDHOOD
Jabari was born in 1846 on a small plantation in South Carolina. Him and his parents were slaves, and despite being raised in a very hostile environment he grew up to be a healthy child. At 13 years of age he received his first flogging after being wrongly accused of taking fruit from a tree and eating it. The driver whipped Jabari badly, and he was left in the slavehouse to recover or die.
