Overview
Ba'al Antine is a luxurious capital city in Ezark and one of the oldest, created by the mage Ba'al after repeated attacks from oceanic creatures and marauders. Designed to be an impenetrable fortress and a technological mecca, Ba'al's marble kingdom was nestled in the top of the coastal mountains and was powered by a huge core of lightning underneath a magnificent tower that could fire bolts of electricity at attackers. On top of these defenses, he created electrically powered mace wielding golemn-knights to forever guard his design. After his death the city was passed down to his son and became a major trading city, exporting the finest weapons, furs, spices, and luxuries.
Military
While the kingdom does have a small military, it is extremely organized and powerful, enough to defend the city and patrol the region around it. They are a neutral principality to the sovereign of Ezark and therefore don't interfere with battles within or outside of the country. They are the only kingdom within the world to have such technology such as power cores or powered suits and weapons, and are declared one of the biggest existing wonders by many generals and philosophers.
They are well known for the fortifications of their city, the walls being extremely durable and thick marble with an electrically charged perimeter of metal ground plates. Lined along the walls are "bolters," which are ballista-like slings that rapidly fire up to +30 2 foot long explosive headed javelins in a minute. There are up to 200 golemn-knights that patrol the city, and stand up to 16 feet tall, twice the size of the average Ulthuran man, and are powered with durable wires supplied power by the core of the city.
The most powerful defense of the city and its icon is The Tower, this tower was originally used by Ba'al so he could stand upon it and view his land and hurl lightning at the invaders, after his death it was re-designed to do just the same but through a magical gem. This gem can strike targets up to a mile away with 45 feet of accuracy once every 30 minutes and has the ability to wipe out armies before they can even arrive.
Birth & Early Life
Sired under general Quantridor Ultritades and mothered by a healer, Contratus had a very easy childhood, he never went hungry and was taught at an early age to lead as his father does. His life changed for even more the better when it was realized he was born under divine providence, quickly his parents and community noticed his godly strength and fortitude, and he was turned over to the king to be specially trained and educated.
Teenage Years & Young Adulthood
Connections from his father and his divine right quickly put Contratus on a fast track to military superiority, he already was leading around 300 men at his age and was quickly garnering more troops, it was when mass civil war broke out in Ezark was he truly tested. The empire of Feradda, an island off of Ezark, had challenged the kings authority and the multiple client states under his authority saw their time to rise. The continent was quickly split up into dozens of nations and and the prophecy of the "Kavala" began spreading, where a supposed hero chosen by god would unite the country once more, causing many warlords to take the title which further wracked the stability of the newborn countries. Contratus was tasked with conscripting troops and securing the villages near Ba'al Antine, in total he led 2,300 troops and won 4 skirmishes and 2 major battles over the course of of the human equivalent of 15 years. The end of the wars came when the true Kavala arose and took control of the lands through a balance of prudent diplomacy and swift military victories, he revealed himself as Astantine - their god - and became king of Ezark.
Twilight Years and Death
At an older age Contratus was now Royal General, leading nearly all of the kingdom's military forces. Even though he was now weaker and humbled by time, he mind was sharp and his armor still arrogantly caught the light for itself, the only thing now more tighter than his army was polishing habits. The young man who was heir to the previous king Contratus served was fair yet strict, and by the kingdom's standard a fine new king, though he was naive and tricked through the subversion of a foreign nation and replaced by a tyrannical partisan. After months of despair a large portion of the original city guard had fled and the tyrants foreign troops had begun to ship in, Contratus saw this drop in troops as his time to strike and he declared he and his men separatists and attacked the city. Even with his manpower and skills as a general the city held with the low numbers of troops it had and the only way he could see attaining victory was not as a general, but a hero. His now grayed and ostensibly frail arms pushed his men aside as he ran alone to the walls, the combination of explosives and arrow fire had slowed his body but not the rage in his old heart. He dug his fingers into the walls of the city and he could feel his long gone strength return one final time, tearing it asunder and pulling a portion of the wall down. He was crushed under the rubble but gave leeway to his troops to be sent in and retake the city, after the young king was sat on the throne again he put Contratus to rest within the royal burial grounds, a shrine was devoted to him and there he was intended to lie for eternity to guard the city in spirit as patron saint.
Rebirth & Undeath
Decades later, within the recess of the city's keep, dark-clad men spoke darker words, and performed even darker things. The long forgotten idea of a gleaming champion slowly turned to a nightmarish hypothetical as the new mad king's necromancers ripped Contratus' soul from the world and bound him to a suit of armor. Once again the hero awoke, though instead of his tired eyes he last saw through admiring the marble rubble of his city that put him to rest, he glared through crude metal slits and the cold stone ceiling of dungeons. The outlines of the hands he saw grasp for safety were lumbering and frightening in the dark, he couldn't seem to remember the outlines of his hands now, though surely they were just beyond his eyes, he thought. It was only when he saw the dust of his old body scattered among the floor did his fate begin to settle in to his throat like the teeth of a predator. The reflection of his new monstrous body he saw in the dark waters of the dungeon drew a metallic scream from him that chilled the skeletons of the trees among the mountains.
Contratus fled later in those few weeks of acclimating to his new "body," and adventured the world. His imprisoned soul sought freedom and his best idea to reach such a thing was glory, he became a hero again and helped those he could. He found in his adventuring that his spirit within the suit was still as strong as always, and his only limitation was the suit's stiffness, though it was extremely durable and heavy. He found that through conniving he could force his container into the air as a rough method of flight, and became known as "The Ghost of Ezark."
Suit
Standing at 8'3, and weighing over 600lbs, Contratus could be considered a literal tank. While the ages of adventuring and combat have marred the armor, it still has a natural beauty to it that catches the eye. The armor is composed of a strong, magical alloy that has a naturally light-silver color to it and if one were to look close enough they could see the faint streaks and ripples of the other ores throughout the metal, giving it a Damascus-like swirl to the armor. The cape and skirt are of a very exquisite quality and velvet material and dyed in a drab purple.
The helmet is representative of a general of Ba'al Antine, with a tight skull helmet and outwardly pointed crest. The faceplate is stoic and cut at sharp angles to display power and wisdom, though also with a soft curve in the cheeks and nose along with down cut mouth slit meant to display a friendliness of the face and a warmth that can make its admirers feel inspired and enemies feel outmatched.
A wavering plume of white smoke is always emanating from the eyes, and when he speaks a small amount of such smoke also exhumes from the mouth slit.
From an engineering stand-point the armor is extremely advanced for its time, with working hinges and joints allowing for a decent range of motion, with the inside consisting of removal parts of metal flaps allowing for crude speech. The pieces of armor that aren't stark platemail are a few dozen smaller pieces jointed together to mimic the flexibility of the legs and arms.
Spirit
When he's out of his suit for his limited time Contratus takes form as his apparition, which when close enough has the outline of his younger, muscular form. A white-grey smoke billows strongly from his eyes and mouth, which are pinched in a stone-like look of agony and despair. A dark purple aura envelops him, though he's mostly transparent in spirit form and can be almost completely invisible in low-light areas. He no longer moves stiffly when out of his suit and has a swift freedom to his movements, even though his face is awash with sadness his body language yells "unbound" on its own.
Social
Contratus is as quiet as death mostly, and as certain as it. As he has to forcefully exert his vaporous form within the suit to painstakingly create each word, he holds brevity, curtness, and veracity to an extreme, some of his longest sentences containing less than a dozen words. Among enemies to any degree and friends of every level of trust he holds the same level of professionalism, and due to his past history as a soldier and his vacant emotional state he's stoic and subservient to something akin to a robot. While he could be seen as uncaring and cruel, all he wishes for is to be seen as a hero, and while his ideals usually keep him from being viewed as such he has a very clear inner motive of attaining a status of glory and heroism.
Quirks & Habits
His oddest habit is his attachment to mundane inanimate objects such as tables, cups, and books, which is possibly some sort of deeply rooted empathy towards miscellaneous objects he relates to himself which are also wordless and lone but hold their own qualities. He treats these objects he finds and meets as family and it is one of the scant few things he'll actually try to not break in a fight. The quietness and deathlike stiffness he has strikes fear in the unknowing and creates barriers between him and other people, he often stands alone inspecting objects and things around him. Ironically as a spirit animals seem to be drawn to him naturally and often birds or stray cats will come to him to rest or survey him, so he has more time with animals and creatures and therefore feels more comfortable around them.
While his context would cause one to assume he's slow of mind, he's actually extremely smart, within genius levels. Though due to his spirit form he can only pull up so much knowledge at once, he shines brightest in combat and leading others, but other things take him longer to remember and process.
Suit Powers
- Might of Ba'al Antine - Within his armor Contratus can lift an upwards of 1500 tonnes, there isn't a quantifiable way to measure how hard he can hit without breaking the equipment yet, but take the shattered buildings as an example.
- Antinian Engineering- Between the fortitude of his spirit and the fine craftsmanship of his suit there isn't much that can damage him.
- Wings of Ba'al - Through forcing his spirit against the armor Contratus can "fly" and launch himself through the air at an upwards of 600 MPH.
Neutral Powers
- Champion of The Dead - Being among them, Contratus can see and speak to the dead.
- Spirit Vision - Contratus sees in multiple levels of the electromagnetic spectrum, including infrared, xray, and ultraviolet. He can't subdue this however so it has driven him partially to madness.
- Beast Speak - With use of spirit energy Contratus can speak to and influence animals, he can also pick up foreign languages near immediately.
- Prison of Undeath - If he loses his armor or is destroyed over time it will find a way to return to itself, reform, and draw his spirit back within it. Though this makes him undying, he can't stop it and is cursed to live forever
Spirit Powers
- Vapor Seep - In spirit form Contratus can get through minutely sized cracks and porous objects.
- Incorporeal - Due to being nothing more than energy in this form he can't be hit, but also can't hit anything, hitting him will simply shorten the time he can be out of his suit.
- Ghost Rage - In a similar vein to poltergeists, Contratus can channel spiritual power to violently affect smaller objects, using this again shortens his spirit time and the bigger the object he affects the more severe it is.
- Wise - Being ageless and thoroughly educated gives him fair prospect in any affair.
- Tactician - Time as a general and lone hero make him an equally dangerous strategist and combatant.
- Fearless - Age and inability to feel pain combined with a sense of duty makes him completely unafraid of anything.
- Analgesic - Due to not having a physical form Contratus feels no pain.
- Tireless - Lack of a physical form with the combination of a powerful heart makes him able to go on indefinitely.
- Durable - As he was designed to be charged by electricity, and his armor is a combination of two of his world's strongest metals, lightning attacks have little to no effect on him, other elements could work, though his armor is extremely heat resistant. Mental attacks also do not work at all as he has no physical mind.
- Slowness - His suit causes him to move slowly and fight slowly, he can't react as fast as a normal person and certainly couldn't catch somebody if he wanted too.
- Reflexes - The chances of him dodging an attack are nil, he has to take essentially every hit coming his way unless he has enough time to predetermine if he can dodge it.
- Immortality - The trials of time unending often leave him in a depressed state, and often cause him to try and end himself by combat, which never works.
- Magic - Magic of any nature, especially unholy, can severely damage him and put him in a comatose state.
- Inhuman - People don't like him for what he is and he doesn't really like himself either.
- Cape of Teluhai - After saving a travelling priest caravan, a disguised god gave Contratus this magical item, allowing him to carry up to 200 pounds effortlessly within the void of the cape.
- Waza Sand/Drum - A sought after item for adventurers and armies, this metallic, silver grain flashes brightly and bounces in tune when the corresponding drum is hit, and is used to explore dark places, mark trails, and work as a beacon.
- Spear of Ba'al Antine - Given as a champion's weapon before he fled the kingdom, this magnificent decorative fighting spear is charged by sunlight and enemy strikes, and when charged can fire an extremely destructive bolt of electricity.
- General's Blades - High quality swords used by the generals of leading the armies of Ba'al Antine, these swords are partially made from Thalk, a magic ore, which makes them especially durable and resistant to magic attacks.
- Mahlus Ink - A special and ancient form of magic, this ink can be drawn in specific tattoo patterns to give the bearer powers, it won't work on Contratus as he has no skin but will work on others.
- Thaumaturgic Scrolls -Lifetimes over of work has amassed Contratus a handful of scrolls. These scrolls, when read in the right language, create a temporary and godly effect on the user.
- Mahlus - Taught to him by the true Kavala as a young man, he can mark special ritual emblems on skin to give the bearer of the mark a certain power that renews over time.
- Antii Speech - Learned through education as a boy by royal mages, he can't use the magic language of his people as he has no physical form to channel it through though, but can teach it and read it.
- Strategist - Being a general for so long has made him a force to be reckoned with.
- Forging - As he was born in a city of craftsman, he picked up the natural handiness with the hammer and the anvil like any other of his countrymen quickly.
