Biography
Legend and Lore
Originally thought of as only myth, Mount Sibiila is said to have been created when a large chunk of Questionite fell from the sky and crashed into a mountain located in the Ethiopian heartland, over six hundred years ago. Legend tells that a local chieftain, Tessema Negasi went to investigate the site and was attacked by a large lion with a coat of shimmering silver fur. With the chieftain’s spear broken during the fight, he slew his enemy with a shard of the metallic substance in each hand. As a ritual of battle, the Lion’s blood was poured into a goblet from which the chieftain drank before letting out a cry of victory that could be heard across the land. From that day did Tessema and his people take up residence in what they called Mount Sibilla; the Mountain of Iron. And did they as a tribe now call themselves the Leenca, the Lion-Men.
For hundreds of years Mount Sibiila and its inhabitants remained outside of public knowledge, content to remain isolated from the world. However, during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia 1936-41, there came reports of a mysterious man fighting against the occupation dressed in the garb of a lion. It was rumoured he was faster and stronger than any man ought to be, with claws that could rip through steel. The connotations were enough for the oppressed people to hail him as a champion of the lost Leenca tribe, and a symbol to spur them into action. What they did not know was that this man, Iskander Kelile, was in fact King of the Leenca. In the ensuing war, and after an impassioned speech from the King to his council, a full force of Leenca warriors engaged and defeated an Italian army headed for an undefended city in southern Ethiopia. Statements from the survivors told of “fearsome tribal warriors, men and women, with infallible weapons and shields no bullets could pierce. And at their head... was him... Leone di Ferro, the Iron Lion”. The world became fascinated with these mythical warriors, where they came from, and their weaponry.
By 1943, Ethiopia and her allies had successfully fought off the occupation and peace returned. The people of Leenca returned to their hidden homeland and back to obscurity. But the fascination continued, numerous adventure expeditions were organised in hopes of finding Mount Sibilla, though none accomplished it. However, in 1972 a young archaeologist named Dr. Iona MacKay became detached and lost from the British expedition party she was travelling with. She wandered the wilderness for days until, near death, she was found by a man in a silver lions mask. He brought her to Mount Sibiila where she was nursed back to health, and became the first outsider to ever lay eyes on the hidden kingdom. She soon learned just who her rescuer was; he was named Tafari Iskander, Iron Lion, King of the Leenca and ruler of Mount Sibiila. After many weeks passed, the pair began a longstanding courtship, and were married in 1974.
However, 1974 also saw the rise of a communist military coup for the power in Ethiopia. The land became a hotbed of strife and injustice. Then as before, the Iron Lion went out alone to protect the innocents at his doorstep. His efforts lasted years, often getting between his marriage and his rule. But during a period of relative calm, in the year 1988, the couple gave birth to a child. A boy. The kingdom rejoiced. A few years later, an event caused mass-bewilderment among the Leenca, an outsider had reached the very gates of Mount Sibiila. Receiving the audience of the King, the man declared he represented an organisation named VIPER, who desired the Questionite buried within the mountain. He warned that they would purchase it from them as friends, or take it from them as enemies. The King flatly refused, and banished him from the dominion.
There followed a nervous year for the people of Mount Sibiila. Their location was known by an enemy they knew little about, and there was a common feeling that the outside world would soon come crashing in on them. The warriors looked to their defences while the King spent more time with his family, though the threat of the future was ever at his mind. And then came the day he received reports of enemies at the gates. VIPER had come. The King ordered the evacuation of the young and elderly of the Leenca, with his son and wife to go with them. And then he and his warriors, the Lions from the Mountain of Iron, readied themselves for battle. They fought with the valour and ferocity for which they were famed, but the hi-tech arsenal of VIPER and its super soldiers proved deadly. With nearly all of his brave men and women defeated, the King went to his last resort. With the touch of a button, he set off a chain of explosives causing the mountain to crackle and crumble in on itself. The colossal implosion destroyed everything and everyone in the vicinity. Mount Sibilla, the Mountain of Iron, was no more.
