Background and Origin

Early Years

Sasha Petrovich grew up in the waning years of the Soviet Union in the city of Kursk, near the Ukranian border. He grew up with only his immediately family, which consisted of just his mother and father. Sasha's mother was a seamstress, and known around the neighborhood for her kind demeanor and musical laugh. His father was a firm, but fair man, who worked as a laborer on construction jobs. His diverse skills learned through experience rather than scholarly study, which was difficult to afford in the hard times many faced towards the end of ther Soviet Era. Sasha looks back on his youth fondly, as his parents both instilled in him strong senses of right and wrong, duty, and compassion.

When Sasha was twelve, his mother became gravely ill, contracting tuberculosis. The family did not have the funds necessary for the costly medical treatments that could have helped her, and the crumbling, failing Soviet social safety net was nowhere to be found that far from Moscow. Sasha and his father were forced to watch as she wasted away. Sasha's father, ever stoic, grieved quietly and carried on, and Sasha attempted to follow his example, burying the pain of the loss.

After completing high school Sasha joined his father at the construction firm he worked for as there was little to spare for things like college. The hard physical work suited the burly young man, and he flourished in the environment, learning many of the skills of the trade, from welding, to riveting, from framing to roofing. A few years passed, and Sasha had grown into a tall, broad-shouldered man. His father was quietly proud of his son, and showed it in small ways that only the two of them understood, such was the bond that had grown since the passing of Sasha's mother. ragedy struck again, however, as an on-site accident at work claimed the life of Sasha's father. Several heavy concrete pipes broke free of their moorings and rolled over the unsuspecting man. Sasha was there, and single handedly lifted several of the four to five hundred pound pipes off of his father, fear and adrenaline driving him beyond his normal limits. Sasha's father died there, before emergency units could arrive. Sasha held him to the end.

Transformation

Sasha tried to follow the example of his father and carry on. He buried the pain of the loss of his family and simply kept working, not knowing anything else to do. He dove into the job, working long hours with overtime. His co-workers became a surrogate family of sorts, and made it a point to try and keep Sasha cheerful most of the time. They would often drag him from his home or after work to various night clubs, and despite his protests Sasha did enjoy the outings, as he genuinely did like to be around people. It was during one of these time he met his first love, a fiesty black-haired girl named Lena. Not long after they began dating, Lena moved in with Sasha and things were beginning to look up. Only Sasha did not know that someone was watching him from the shadows.

One night, after finishing off several rounds with his friends from work Sasha had opted to walk home that evening. While not overly intoxicated, he did fail to notice the figures lurking in the nearby alleyway before they were upon him. After a brief struggle, Sasha was knocked unconscious. When he awoke he was in totally unfamiliar surroundings. Sasha was strapped to some sort of large, cold, metal table. Computers blinked and beeped nearby. Bright lights shone down on him from above, nearly blinding him. Shadowy figures, their features obscured by the bright back lighting, loomed above him.

Only one of the figures ever spoke, and only briefly, to inform Sasha that he was to be the first of his new breed of soldiers, infused with the power of soviet industry and innovation. Machine arms, looking like something you would see on the assembly line of a car factory, then rolled into view and went to work. The following days were a scene out of a horror film. The robotic "doctors" tore Sasha's arms from his body. In their place were bolted massive metal prosthetics. The devices resembled construction equipment more than human arms and hands. His spine and legs were also surgically modified, being reinforced to support the power of the artificial arms, leaving huge gashes along his back and the length of his legs and thighs. Strange devices were wired into some of his vital organs through brutally torn open hole in his abdomen, namely his heart, liver, and kidneys. These seemed to provide some sort of support function for the mechanical limbs. The robotic surgeons used blood and drugs to keep Sasha alive during the procedures, but not any anesthetic. Sasha lapsed in and out of consciousness innumerable times from the pain. After an unknown period of time, the process was complete. The shadowy figure returned to observe his handiwork.

For the perfect soldier free will was absolutely out of the question, of course. The final step of the process would be the attachment of the control device, which appeared to be a large, full metal helmet intended to be bolted into his skull. After days of agony, what should have been a final, crippling blow to the man, Sasha summoned what remained of his willpower. His new limbs responded to his mental commands and snapped Sasha free from his bonds. Blinded by pain and fear, the bionically augmented Russian smashed his way free from the factory and into the night, much to the surprise of his former captor, whom Sasha never got a clear look at. How long Sasha ran he did not know. He was in unfamiliar territory in the Russian countryside. Nearly naked and freezing, he eventually collapsed.

Recent Years

When Sasha awoke, he discovered that he had managed to, in his pain-filled delirium, find his way home. He was laying on the porch of his small house covered in a thin layer of snow. Lena returned some time after, and was shocked to find Sasha had returned. He had been missing for several weeks. In the days that followed Sasha attempted to return to a normal life, but he found the difficulties insurmountable. Controlling his modified body and limbs was difficult, fine motor control was all but lost and several walls suffered the consequences as Sasha attempted to master his new limbs. As the surgical wounds healed, the pain remained, and only Sasha's iron will allowed him to continue to function. Lena was unable to cope with the changes that were inflicted on her lover. She left a shame-filled goodbye letter for Sasha to find one morning, having packed a suitcase and fled in the night as he slept. This was more than the usually stoic Russian could bear. All of the repressed grief and anguish of previous years boiled up as he found himself well and truly alone, and the childhood home that had sheltered Sasha and his family for years was reduced to rubble by the raging cyborg.

With nothing left tying him down, Sasha made his way across country to the United States consulate in Moscow. Since Sasha suspected that the Russian government might be somehow involved in his abduction he tried to keep as low a profile as a man with giant metal arms possibly could, which meant that stories of everything from a rogue robot to frankenstein's monster tearing across the night time countryside quickly spread. More than once Sasha was accosted by police and once by military forces. Each time Sasha refused to go quietly, but likewise refused to harm anyone, using only the minimum force required to escape. Eventually, he found his way to the U.S. consulate. There he successfully petitioned both the U.S. and UNTIL for asylum. After a small political bruhahah, the fledgeling cyborg was eventually extracted from Russia and brought to the United States, specifically Millenium City, which was already known to be a hot bed of superbeing activity. Sasha took some time to acclimate to his new home, taking courses in english and working with the UNTIL researchers to learn more about what exactly had been done to him. His arms turned out to be phenomenally strong, along with the reinforcements to his spine and legs. The arms worked on a combination of hydraulics and chains, causing them to clank loudly when applying their full strength. Internally, the machines connected to his vitals converted his vital essence into hydrualic fluid and lubricant for his machine parts. The pain remained a constant companion, and the internal filters that supported his machinery prevented most drugs from having any lasting effect or providing much relief. Sasha made the effort to learn basic meditative techniques from some of the more cerebral members of the staff at UNTIL while he was with them, to help compartmentalize the pain and allow him to function more or less normally.

After several months Sasha was given provisionary citizenship, with the condition that he would assist PRIMUS and UNTIL forces as needed if his talents would be useful. In between those times, Sasha occupied himself by finding familiar work. His newfound strength made him uniquely suited to return to his old profession, something familiar in which he could immerse himselfin this new country. Thus the official job title of 'human forklift' was created for Sasha and he entered the work force. The frequent battles between villains and the heroes of Millenium City keeps construction work steady, and Sasha still volunteers in the aftermath of such battles, assisting emergency crews with search and rescue efforts, lifting rubble carefully from trapped people. For the most part, Sasha feels he has found his place here in old Detroit, but much of the emotional pain he has endured remains unaddressed, buried deeply behind a wall of stoic, Russian stubbornness.

Powers, Skills, and Attributes

Powers

Mechanically Augmented Strength - Gauntlet's strength is incredible considering the crude construction of his mechanical arms. He has been rated at a maximum of 100 ton lifting capacity before his arms and their supporting structures began to fail. His legs are also much stronger than that of a normal human, but much less so than the arms in terms of raw power. Nontheless he is able to propel himself through the air and across the ground at impressive speeds, if not with a great deal of grace.

Endurance and Pain Resistance - While Gauntlet remains mostly flesh and blood and vulnerable to cuts, burns, and bullets, his experiences and sheer mental fortitude render him extremely resistant to the immediate effects of such wounds. Thus Gauntlet can ignore the distraction and debilitating effects of all but the most grievous wounds, at least long enough to finish the fight, assuming blood loss or some such doesnt overtake him first.

Resistance to toxins and disease - The interal devices which support the heavy mechanisms of his arms also serve as a set of supercharged filters. The result is that Gauntlet is mostly unaffected by most toxins, drugs, and infections. This makes most beneficial medicines largely ineffective. It also makes the consumption of alcohol or any other recreational drug an exercise in futility and frustration.

Skills

Professional Construction Worker - Gauntlet has been in the construction business for years. He has a working knowledge of basic architecture, carpentry, welding, riveting, roofing, framing, and a myriad of other applicable skills to supplement his obvious value of a heavy lifter.

Ameteur Chef - Gauntlet has a natural talent for cooking, and since coming to Millenium City has prided himself on picking recipes up from all over the city and adding them to his repertoire. He enjoys entertaining guests and cooking for his friends.

Combat Training - Since his modifications, Gauntlet has sought out training in several different martial arts. While by no means a master in any sense, he has studied traditional wrestling, tae kwon do, and judo as a means of bettering his ability to function in a fight.

Gear and Equipment

Gear

Weapon - Gauntlet does not normally carry any kind of weapon into battle, as his massive metal arms normally suffice. In a pinch he may rely on the environment around him, borrowing nearby objects to hurl should a ranged weapon be necessary, or if touching his opponent would prove more hazardous than the alternative.

Armor - Gaunlet only wears armor when he expects to he heading into a dangerous situation. His arms are capable of withstanding immense punishment, and so any armor he wears serves only to shield his vitals from harm, as they are not reinforced like his arms, spine, and legs.

Gadget - Gauntlet has access to a small detachable jet pack which he uses when working along the upper stories of a construction site, or when travelling through difficult terrain. Otherwise his only other carried equipment consists of a large multitool, which he keeps on hand for emergency repairs to his prosthetics.

Relationships

Lover

Gauntlet has, of late, been frequently seen in the company of Vivienne Xen'Thalas. Though the details of their association are sketchy, he does display a rather obvious fondness for the beautiful offworlder.

Friends/Allies

Put any friends or allies your character may have in here. You may give them descriptions or simply list them. To make a numbered list, simply place a # at the beginning of each new line:

  1. Pack Rat - A human-rat hyrbid and munitions specialist. Former roommate.
  2. Bestla - A giant-blooded winter shaman. Friend and ally.
  3. Sajit - A lycanthrope shaman. Loosely associated through Pack Rat.

Enemies

  1. The Mysterious Mechanist - More of a description than any real title, the man that took Gauntlet's life from his has been spotted in Millenium City. What this means for the cybernetic superman has yet to be revealed.

General Perception

Gauntlet has never been one to hog the spotlight. He is mostly content to simply do his job and help whenever he can. He has a reputation around the neighborhoods of millenium city as being brave, honest, and reliable. He has occasionally been interviewed by the media, mostly during his disaster search and rescue work. He doesnt mind answering questions but has no time for the camera if lives are still at risk.
