Background and Origin

Pre-Death

Sam Hudson was born on July 9, 1899 in Augilla, Mississipi to a family of poor dirt farmers. Despite his family's minimal wealth he found enough to keep him occupied and happy. He busied himself with shooting cans in the fields during the days and reading the works of Edgar Allan Poe in the evening. At a young age he became fascinated with the idea of a supernatural world beyond the one he was accustomed to. This lead him on numerous voyages into the surrounding wilderness in search of clues to the existence of such a world, however nothing was ever found. Three weeks after his thirteenth birthday, his mother succumbed to a brief battle with pneumonia and passed away. Several weeks later his father, stricken with grief, hung himself in their barn leaving Sam an orphan.

After a short legal procession, Sam was placed in an orphanage in Jackson, Mississippi. He spent less than a month in the institution before he escaped one day and stowed away in a boxcar on a train bound for New Orleans. There he took to the streets and make his way by picking pockets or pilfering small items from market stalls. He marveled at the mysterious nature of the city as his old curiosity for the dark corners of the Earth began to rise once again. Shortly after his fifteenth birthday, however, war broke out across Europe and Sam enlisted illegally with the US Army and was shipped off to war thereafter. From 1914 to 1918, Sam fought beside his brothers in arms and watched many of them die all the same. His desire to have a supernatural experience waned with each of his friends that passed away on the battlefield. When the war was over, Sam Hudson went home a man, and a nearly different person altogether. He had trouble keeping a job upon returning home, as nothing could compare to his life as a soldier and he craved the excitement and fear that war had addicted him to. When Prohibition was enacted and the bootleggers began their crusade, Sam left for the hotbed of organized crime and joined the Chicago Police Department. He rose quickly to detective and distinguished himself as he helped combat organized crime through the end of Prohibition and into the Great Depression. As his life began to settle into a routine, he soon took a wife and had a child. He was nearing his forties when the case that changed his life came across his desk.

To Hell and Back

When Sam Hudson picked up the case file, he never knew that it would be the turning point in his life. He was assigned lead to a team of investigators tasked with undermining a minor crime syndicate in Chicago. As his team neared completion of this feat, he returned home one evening to find his wife and son slain in his home. Crippled with anguish, he never noticed that the gunman was still in the house. He never felt the slug that penetrated his skull and killed him instantly. Death was not Sam Hudson's final destination however. For all the lives he'd taken during the war in Europe and the war on crime, he was sent to Hell to pay penance. Upon reaching his supposed eternal resting place however, his soul was not deemed corrupt enough to be damned for eternity, yet was not pure enough to ascend to everlasting life. Instead Sam Hudson was cursed and sentenced to spend the rest of eternity as Hell's bail bondsman, forced to seek out and return fugitive souls to their fate. Bound by living chains as a constant reminder of his servitude, he was cast out of Hell to walk the line between life and death.

As Sam found his way back to the mortal plane, he saw things like never before. He could sense the lost spirits that roamed the Earth and he was keen to the rituals and summonings that occurred within the shadows. For two years he roamed the country as a vagabond, struggling to maintain coherence. Like the siren's song war called out to him once again as the US entered World War II in 1941. He was recruited into a special task force of the Office of Strategic Services designed to combat Hitler's own occult bureau. It was in France that Sam first encountered Heinrich Färber, otherwise known as Wolfangel. During a raid into an abandoned chateau in search of the spear that had supposedly pierced the side of Christ, Sam's team met face to face with Wolfangel's own. A bloody battle ensued as Sam and Wolfsangel unleashed their own dark powers against each other. Wolfsangel managed to escape with the spear and Sam began his pursuit that spanned several decades. He let Sam die in those stone corridors along with the rest of his team, referring to himself only as THE INSPECTRE!

Powers, Skills, and Attributes

Powers

Infernal Manipulation - During his escape from Hell, Sam Hudson formed a symbiotic relationship with the chains that once held him prisoner. Though them he controls the damning energy and focuses it against errant demons and spirits as well as common thugs, passing judgement on them as the case warrants.

Deathspeak - The Inspectre maintains the ability to communicate with departed souls, willing them back into whatever remains of their corporeal form on Earth.

Deathstride - Being tethered to both planes of life and death, The Inspectre is able to blink between them to travel short distances quickly on either side.

Skills

Expert Marksman - Having spent much of his life fighting one war or another, The Inspectre has become extraordinarily proficient with firearms, especially so with handguns.

Keenly Observant - The many years spent studying and solving crimes both mundane and supernatural have honed The Inspectre's skills finely, letting him pick up on minute details that may not seem important and correlate them to larger evidence in a case.

Fast Learner - Due to having to constantly adapt to changing times and circumstances, The Inspectre has learned how to use most modern technology required in his field of work, whether it be hacking a low security computer system or rewiring an enemy deathbot.

Attributes

Horribly Disfigured - Being burned repeatedly and having his skin flayed from his body over and over again has caused scarring over much of his body. Inhalation of scorching vapor has scarred his larynx and vocal cords, giving his voice a strained gravelly quality.

Loner - Severe emotional trauma has caused The Inspectre to draw within himself, rarely opening up to an ally. This inhibits him from making long lasting allies easily and serves to earn him the enmity and disdain of other heroes.

Glowing Eyes - The Inspectre's eyes glow with a sickly putrid green, giving him a slightly ethereal appearance, especially when concealing himself in darkness.

Gear and Equipment

Gear

Smith & Wesson .38 Police Specials This pair of revolvers has been with The Inspectre since he first made detective on the Chicago Police Department. Imbued with the energy of his Living Chains, they serve to dispatch the dark shadows in the night or incapacitate ordinary criminals lurking in the back alleys.

Grappling Hook Despite being able to walk through Purgatory from point to point, The Inspectre carries a grappling hook for a more ordinary form of quick travel.

Ravenwing - An advanced aircraft capable of long range scans and zero gravity flight. Liberated from VIPER and refitted by UNTIL.

Relationships

Lover

Occasionally Sam Hudson will endeavor to communicate with his deceased wife, Jane Hudson. He only seeks her out in desperate times, and she often encourages him from beyond the grave, inspires him to continue his crusade and offers invaluable advice.

Enemies

Wolfsangel - Ex-Nazi High Sorcerer though to posses the Spear of Destiny

General Perception

Perception of The Inspectre is usually that of uninformed terror and morbid curiosity as he does not often assossicate of make himself or his actions known to the mundane citizens he encounters.
