Bio
From early childhood, Jo Marx dreamed of being an Olympic athlete. Despite being a bit of a rebel, she excelled in track and field in high school, earning a scholarship and the interest of the women's Olympic team. When she got to college, however, her wild side came to the fore and Jo began drinking and partying too much. Her athletic performance suffered, and she didn't make the Olympic team. Appalled and embarrassed by her failure, she dropped out of college. Unfortunately, having never previously considered the possibility that she would /not/ make the team, Jo had never really come up with a "Plan B." Not surprisingly, she soon ran into financial difficulty. As a result, Jo turned to petty scams, which got her the attention of Brian Carlotti, a talented con artist with ties to the mafia, who co-opted her and made her his partner.
They operated fairly successfully in the Midwest for about three years until the night the pair showed up at the high-end gallery owned by the antiquities dealer Gabriel Frost. An alleged grimoire Frost was showcasing seemed to call out to Carlotti. He tried to take the book, only to be challenged for it by Maya Devereux, another buyer who was secretly an Ouroboros cultist. Maya killed Carlotti with magic, but when she attacked Frost, he blocked her magical attacks with the book, activating the grimoire and opening a portal to the Plane of Shadow. Jo fled through the portal with the others to escape.
The Plane of Shadow turned out to be a traumatic experience: it was dark and gloomy, and home to numerous hideous monsters. Moreover, everyone began to manifest strange powers. Two of the group were killed by nightmarish monsters and another disappeared with no trace in the couple of days it took Frost to learn to re-open the portal. When they arrived back at the gallery, they discovered that only minutes had passed on Earth, and the cultist was still there. Together, the survivors were able to defeat her, prompting Frost to suggest they should all use their new-found powers to combat mystical threats. Shocked by the days-long ordeal, Jo swore to give up her criminal lifestyle and joined the others in forming Black Sun.
