Ann was an ordinary student of anthropology when she realized that some of the magical formulas from the books in the academic library are actually working. It was not before she found unnamed notes which were containing a brief but practical tips how to read and use magic in practice. She didn't take a lot of time to wonder who could have left those notes hidden amongst books in the deepest corner of the library.

Armed with her new magical powers she initially only had fun with sorcery before she came to the conclusion that power means responsibility and it's time to do something good for the rest of the world.

While Ann has fairly good teoretical understanding of magic, she's untrained, also, not really physically fit. She's a fledling hero, known not only for blasting street-level baddies, but also for her inclination for making a lot of collateral damage.

But even with her shortcomings, she has heart at the right side, believes in heroic ideals and never uses lethal force.

Origin:

Ann is a normal, so-called "baseline", human being. She has no magic abilities except the taught ones. Even after a year of heroic career, she's a fledling hero. But she made quite a name for herself because of her skimpy outfits. Mainly in tabloids.

Ann's magical career started with her finding a copybook filled with notes made in the language disturbingly similar to the Old Frankish. Except these notes were new and made by someone who was really proficient with a seemingly dead language. And a very dead one, since this variant of the language vanished out of use even before the times of Charlemagne.

Intrigued, Ann took the book to her place and tried to translate it. Her surprise was even bigger when she discovered that whoever was making the notes, was using those ancient runes for writing remarks about modern world, but also about magical traditions completely foreign for inhabitants of the Dark Age Gaul - Sumerian ones, for example.

The writings were nothing but a collection of personal footnotes and remarks how to read and use in practice incantations included in the anthropology manuals. She found even more - a few hastily written spell formulas, not derived from academic handbooks, instead dedicated to altering spellcaster's body. Whoever made those, seemed to concerned with undergoing certain tasks undercover.

She had to try it. All were here - remedies for both of her big butt and embarassing height. Now she could be looking like a supermodel, even if temporary. For a few next days she was collecting spell ingredients, but also trying simpler formulas. Minor illusions worked, so transmutation ones also ought to be fine.

Finally, she made it. With all the ingredients needed, gathering all her courage, Ann spoke the incantation and triggered the spell.

Except, it didn't worked. Or rather worked in a wrong way. Burning pain filled fer body and she fainted. It was even worse after awakening. All of her hair and fingernails were now silvery white, but when she looked into the mirror and noticed her eyes, she broke up. Instead of looking like a goddess, she was now a weirdo.

After another few days filled with panic and mental breakdown, when she was slowly realising that changes are permanent, Ann had no choice but to dye her hair. Thankfully, she also had her contact lenses for masking changes made to her eyes.

But then she had a visit, and it was not a pleasant one. The masked man with a long hair, entered her bedroom through the window and immediately, with a harsh voice, requested the notes being returned to him. And then he noticed her eyes and a silvery white roots of her hair. And his eyes slided to her hands, noticing fingernails.

And then he was only laughing, before talking to Ann.

- "Such restless and stupid youngling you are... Smart enough to understand basics of the craft by your own, but not enough to remember that magick is the very touch of the chaos. And you should be never triggering an unfinished spell. Pray to the Lord and be thankful to Him, because you could end as well with a few additional arms, or as a pile of sentient slime. Clearly he was watching over you."

- "Let it be, then. Tomorrow I shall see you at my place, and together we shall see if anything could be done with undoing this fruit of your foolishness. Though I doubt. Seemingly you were remarkably good at this permanency part." - chuckling under his mask, the man gave Ann a scrap of paper with adress written and left her bedroom, taking the notes with him.

Next day was the first one of Ann's magical training. Albeit Iovar initially pondered simply erasing her memory with magic, he also felt guilty of her accident. Thus, he'd rather decided to teach Ann a proper use of arcane, and since girl seemed to be kind and good-hearted, if a bit stubborn, to train her also as a hero.

- "The magick shall not be taken lightly, Ann. As it is power, and power tends to corrupt those who are of the weak heart. I shall make you into the servant of the people, as I am. But first, you will learn to behave. I should not be enduring this antics of your, even if I had to bend you a little. You WILL learn, as a mage cannot be taught the magick before being taught how to be humble."

Personality:

There is a lot of difference in Ann's behaviour between her acting as Ann Mary Beckett, and as the Magician. The first one is a mask of the shy, well-mannered bookworm and a hardworking student - very calm, polite and obedient to her parents.

The latter one is well-spoken and playful, with traces of insolence showing, often quite direct and bold. Also, much more freed if not outright promiscuous.

The real Ann is somewhere in the middle. It's simply that she was for so long obedient to everything what her family wanted from her to do, that she had enough and now uses her secret identity not only for heroing, but also for enjoying this freedom.

Ann tries to be open-minded and direct and certainly doesn't have any problems with speaking her mind loud, to the point of being mildly insolent. On the other hand, she's pretty new to this metahuman world and on occasions she may be shocked by new people and situations.

"What a waste of good suffering!"

Injury is a kind of evil spirit. It strives for touch of the material plane, even if it doesn't have material form - but it can steal corpses and revitalise them. Creature is able to fully regenerate stolen dead body - but it isn't powerful enough for posessing living people. In general, as long as soul is still inside body, Injury cannot use it - it needs souless shells. Also, such limitation means that Injury cannot posess undead creatures, as they are powered mostly by soul trapped in unliving body.

Bodies revitalised by Injury may be male or female, creature is rather genderless on its own and cares little about such differences. In every case this body will be fully alive again, with all organs and tissues working - Injury cannot use nonfunctional bodies, so it has no choice, but to make each body really alive - and souless. Hovewer, revitalisation and growth caused by Injury's unnatural energies ale always visible on rebuilt bodies - things like altered skin color, glowng eyes, claws and horns are really minor alterations. Usually its bodies are much weirder than the latest one - a nameless corpse of female Maniacs member, killed in gang war and discarded at the riverside.

In general, Injury seeks only fun. The problem is, its definition of "fun" is rather dangerous for everyone in its vincity. Injury feeds on pain and unrest, it doesn't know difference between physical suffering and pleasure - so it thinks that initiating gunfights, explosions, running crime rings, or opening ATM's with crowbar, are all good ideas. Fortunately, Injury isn't very strong creature - its physical form is only a bit more durable than human, and its magic isn't really stronger than fully loaded pulson rifle.
