Jaylin possesses an inquisitive nature which has had to be tempered with learned caution. Usually level-headed and calm, the better someone knows her, the more likely they are to see the adorable dork underneath and the wonder and happiness she feels towards life. She strives to be honest, but more recently she's put more effort into not being as blunt as she used to be. Despite the fact she usually insists on non-violent means of combat and has a generally gentle nature, deep convictions and bravery run beneath the surface, especially when it comes to the defense and aid of those she cares about. While intelligent and a quick learner, Jay struggles with some concepts of humor and still has a lingering habit of literal interpretation.
Hailing from a dimension known as Rine, Jaylin arrived on this dimension's Earth by sheer accident. In actuality, Jaylin used to be the omnipresent magic weave of her dimension, but her awareness was considerably more limited than it is now. When the dimension began to collapse, a semblance of survival instinct kicked in and she sought out the first person she was able to make telepathic contact with, who happened to be a woman by the name of Captain Jaylin Skiles.
With little time to spare, an agreement was made between them that Captain Skiles would allow the magic weave to share her body in exchange for a magic boost of her ship, the Swift, to get them both away from the impending collapse quickly enough. Unfortunately, the ship's crew was on shore leave at the time and had to be left behind to face destruction. In her haste to escape, Captain Skiles miscalculated their intended destination and ended up inputting the coordinates for this dimension's Earth into the jump drive.
Once the Swift arrived, the laws governing magic took hold and altered the magic weave that was sharing Captain Skiles' body; it was reshaped and heavily condensed into something finite that barely fit within the human shell. After she awoke, it took days before she was able to find Captain Skiles within herself, there was little of her left. As misfortune would have it, the magic weave inhabiting the body inadvertantly crushed the original Jaylin on a metaphysical level. Grieving for the loss of the person who saved her life, a new Jaylin Skiles was born after the original bequeathed her body, name, and ship to the mystic being she had saved.
Jaylin found herself to be an entirely new person, experiencing nearly everything for the first time. She was naive and innocent to the ways of things, but fortune favored her with good friends to guide and teach her. She learned to conceal her true nature and now poses as a human mage and dimensional refugee, which doesn't seem to be all that strange in Millennium City. Some of the original Captain Skiles' muscle memory and the memories of the Swift persist, but all other traits and skills have since been of Jay's own development.
Jaylin has a great fundamental understanding and sense of magic, given that she's completely made out of it. Detecting most magic comes naturally to her since it's almost just like looking in a mirror. Her potential for magic use is nearly endless, but she has chosen to largely limit herself for moral reasons and she doesn't draw on her own essence now that it's finite. Instead, Jay has taken it upon herself to specialize in transmutation and alteration magicks, allowing her versatility and a means of fighting non-violently. She is proficient in some other magicks, including teleportation, the summoning of items from a small pocket dimension she created, and the offensive use of raw magical energy - though the last is used only as a final resort when all other methods have failed, as it goes against her beliefs.
She's had training with some hand-to-hand combat and throwing weapons, becoming reasonably proficient in both. Recently she's begun to learn archery.
