Five hundred thousand years ago, the Progenitors discovered and meddled with Planet Earth, seeding DNA itself with the future of super-humanity. To this day, these enigmatic beings are alternately venerated and vilified for their impact on sentient life. Many people wondered what life would be like today if these ancient aliens had chosen a different path for their myriad children.
No one ever dared to think that one day they might take a more direct hand in human evolution.
Robert Nelson Grant was a photographer who had suffered a series of misfortunes both personal and professional. After his wife Sophie died of bone cancer, he liquidated his home and most of his possessions to travel the world making money the only way he knew how. His only companion was his husky Remedy, a former rescue dog he'd picked up while on assignment in Anchorage.
After having been robbed and assaulted in Abu Simbel while trying to cover a border war between Egypt and Sudan, Grant exhausted the remainder of his income recovering in a local hospital in Cairo. Finding himself unable to return to America, he jumped at the chance to cover an archaeological dig near Abydos. He ignored the rumors that this dig was financed by Brett Flanders, an eccentric millionaire that believed in "space gods" and ancient astronauts.
But the rumors were not only true, so was the object. As the dig team, accompanied by Grant and Remedy, uncovered and entered an incredibly ancient crypt beneath a hitherto undiscovered mastaba it rapidly became clear that this chamber was anything but Egyptian or even proto-Egyptian.
In fact the chamber was merely the anteroom of a vast underground Kelvaran research complex. Although mostly in ruins, the Progenitor facility was at least partly operational, a semi-sentient cyber-organic computer that had lain dormant for untold millennia. All it waited for was a purpose.
But it had never seen a modern human. Or a domestic dog. It's one hundred thousand year old data banks had no point of reference, and it simply assumed that an evolutionary error had occurred and these two life forms were errors in need of correction and restructuring. When Grant and Remedy approached an emitter array, the human unknowingly triggering its automated response with constant camera flashes, the Kelvaran servitor responded with ancient sophistication and relentless power. In a wash of alien energies, the man and the dog were combined with Kelvaran living metal to form a strange hybrid creature, massive of build and possessed of a combined personality of both of its component beings.
But the living machine was not finished. It had been without direction for so long. And its malfunctioning sensors could no longer detect a Progenitor presence in this star system or anywhere in the local galactic group. Desperate for instructions, it poured its power into crafting a leader for itself. The being it had created began to grow and grow. As the panicked scientists and native diggers fled for their lives, the new composite being burst out of the tomb with a roar; finally reaching a height of more than ten stories before its growth slowed. The Progenitor facility was covered again in rubble, never to be seen again.
At first frightened by his changes, the being (now choosing to call itself Remedy after its beloved canine "component"), managed to think clearly enough to make his way to Millennium City, the one place where he would be guaranteed not to be seen as a freak of nature. Since then, Remedy has taken to the life of a crime fighter while attempting to make sense of his new life. And he always wonders if he really has seen the last of the aliens that changed him.
