Altima
"True Peace is the enemy of True Order."
- Altima
Altima, the Lady of Decaying Bones is an Old God who is said to have existed far before the creation of mankind, and is among one of the most powerful beings in the Champions Universe. According to ancient scribes dating back centuries, Altima existed as a deity whose sole purpose was to bring death and decay toward any living creature she would encounter. Of all the Old Gods, Altima meddled with humankind the most, the most prominent act of her involvement with mankind's state of decay was her creation of the virus, introducing the object into the mortal realm and leading to disease and death.
Traces of Altima's presence were detected by probes from UNTIL, who scoured the far reaches of the universe in a region known as The Decaying Realm. Upon discovering the existence of the probes, Altima tracked down the location of Earth and sought to bring decay to mankind once more, however, was stopped by Doctor Ka, who reasoned that the fate of mankind would be through wars and that without her intervention, mankind would tear themselves apart regardless from their history of violence. Satisfied with this, Altima vowed to not interfere with humankind's affairs, so long as Earth continued with its wars, and the battles between the superheroes and supervillains of the world.
It is through Altima's pact with Doctor Ka that the world cannot achieve true peace, as doing so would result in the Old God's return to terrorize mankind. Due to the cataclysmic scale of Altima's threat to the world, the Old God was designated by UNTIL as a Supercosmic Villain, and her existence was kept strictly confidential from the public.
Appearance
Altima is depicted to be a beautiful woman in her early thirties, despite being several million years old, with glowing green eyes, wild black wispy hair, pale skin, and an indifferent expression on her face.
Contrary to her psychopathic personality, man has often found themselves enthralled by the Old God's appearance, which was believed to be intentional by the goddess as she believed those whom she deemed her prey should approach their death the same way decay and destruction are to occur: naturally.
When Altima channels her powers, a green hue along with an ethereal aura envelopes her body. The souls of those unfortunate enough to strike an interest in the sinister goddess can be seen howling in agony from within her aura.
As an Old God, Altima can assume any form she wishes. Though she is frequently seen in the form of a young woman, her appearance can vary either subtly or dramatically. When Altima was first discovered in the Decaying Realm, she assumed a transformation akin to a writhing nightmarish black mass the size of the planet Jupiter, with several planets orbiting around her, black with decay.
Background
According to Aeternum, one of the oldest extant works written by the prophet Luno, Altima gained conception along with the rest of the Old Gods before the creation of Man, and represented the natural order of decay. As the notion of multiplication through reproduction became prominent in the universe, the importance of Altima's existence became stronger to bring balance to the world. For centuries, Altima was worshipped by Man, with ritualistic human sacrifices performed to please the goddess. However, as the practice of human sacrifice became lost, Altima's followers began to dwindle, greatly angering the goddess and causing her to bring about one of her creations, the virus to introduce infection to mankind.
Altima's first departure from the kingdom of Man was said to have been caused by a struggle between the Old God and the Kings of Edom, in which the goddess fought the five beings for what she perceived to be ownership over the fate of Man, having discovered that Mankind continued to worship the Kings through their countless cults. The battle between Altima and the Five Greatest Beings was said to be so immense that the shockwaves of their clashes caused entire galaxies to tremble, and planets to be knocked out of orbit. Altima and the Kings continued their battle for hundreds of years but the struggle amounted to a centuries-long stalemate. Eventually, the Kings reasoned to Altima that though Mankind worshipped them, it was through the act of abandonment of their humanity, that led to spiritual decay. Realizing the effect that the Kings of Edom and Qlipoth had on Man, Altima was greatly satisfied, and withdrew from the battlefield, seeking to terrorize other walks of life other than man.
For many centuries, Mankind grew without the intervention of Altima, however, Altima never returned as the numerous wars left behind the strong scent of bloodshed which greatly pleased the Old God. As the wars began to decline post World War 2, in which the nations of Earth agreed to put an end to wide-scale war, the scent of blood soon declined, greatly angering the goddess. In response to her rage against the newfound peace that spread across the world, Altima unleashed numerous plagues and diseases including the bubonic plague to torment Mankind. The plagues and destruction soon escalated, and from the anger of the Old God, the concept of supervillains arose. The most notable event, being The Battle of Detroit, which inflicted insurmountable levels of casualties on an international scale, greatly satisfied the Old God. Believing that even without having followers, mankind would continue tearing themselves apart through internal strife, Altima left Earth and pursued other alien races to decay and plague.
Personality
Psychopathic, sadistic, and manipulative, Altima believes that the natural order of the world is to be set in a state of decay and destruction through entropic biological and natural means. Of all the Old Gods, Altima's deranged views on mankind were what set her apart, as her twisted love for death made her fascinated with mortals to the point of obsession, going to whatever extremes were necessary to force decay at any chance she could get.
Altima is highly possessive, frequently having the urge to capture "human toys", killing them, and preserving their souls so they could be a part of her forever. Screaming voices of those trapped by the Old God could be heard to this day from the deity's aura.
Altima's manipulation is notable, as reflected by her flirtatious and seductive mannerisms. Unlike most genocidal deities, Altima prefers having her prey come to her, rather than her launching full-scale assaults as she believes having prey approach their impending doom is "true beauty". As such, most sightings of the Old God have always been through a similar trend of seduction, manipulation, and betrayal leading to the deaths of those who fall victim to the goddess' charm.
Though a deity in status, Altima's twisted and cruel sense of pleasure has at times taken root through humanistic means; going as far as stepping into the mortal realm and interacting with the mortals to fulfill her desires. This is evidenced through Altima's relationship with Archmage Robert Caliburn, in which the goddess took an interest after learning of the mortal's ability to restrain the Nephilim Therakiel. During an encounter with the Archmage, Altima seduced Caliburn, led the lustful mage to her quarters, and forced the superhero to mate with her in an attempt to break him. The traumatic psychological damage inflicted on Caliburn was met with great zeal by the Old God, who continued forcing the Archmage to be her lover and throwing him into a state of despair. The unholy relationship between Caliburn and Altima eventually led to Altima giving birth to the New God Ursis, the son of an Archmage and Old God, who exhibited the ability of immortality. It was later revealed that Altima had carefully planned the creation of her son, such that Ursis would forever live on to haunt Caliburn. The reason for Altima choosing Caliburn was also revealed to be that because Caliburn's powers were angelic in nature, the healing and hope inspired by his magic were met with great disapproval by the Old God. As Altima was incapable of neutralizing Caliburn's powers due to his status as an Archmage, the Old God instead sought to end the superhero through psychological means.
As a Goddess of Decay, Altima harbors extreme hatred for those who embody life and fertility due to being on the other side of the spectrum. These views are so extreme that not even her own immortal son, Ursis, is exempt, as shortly after bearing Caliburn's demigod child, Altima immediately banished the New God from her realm, seeing her own offspring as repulsive.
