Rebecca Constantine's history is shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain - she was born as a completely normal human girl.
At the tail-end of 1993, Rebecca was born to parents Julia and Mark Constantine in Los Angeles. During her childhood, the girl was completely normal in the usual sense of the word. She had long, blonde hair and sky-blue eyes to match her fair, pale complexion. Nothing much of interest happened in this stage of Rebecca's life, as she attended school, got good grades and made a multitude of other friends. This trend continued up until she joined an expeditionary group in her high school, at the age of 15.
The club was funded by the four teachers in charge and involved traveling to other countries known for their history and exploring ancient architecture and uncovering myths. Rebecca loved the expeditions that she and her fellow club-members went on, as they were interesting and allowed her to travel the world at such a young age with good friends. Of course, her parents had a completely different opinion; worried that the caves or ruins their child often ventured into could collapse with the group still inside, or they'd be subject to some ancient disease kept locked up beneath the surface. Because of this, Rebecca decided it would be in her interest not to tell her parents about their latest planned destination - "Monster Island".
Fascinated by the name alone, Rebecca and the other students jumped at the chance to be taken on a tour of the island by a lesser-known hero named Jetset. On arrival, Jetset met the group of four adults and seven teenagers, and agreed to backup from a squad of UNTIL soldiers. Jetset mentioned a cave that was previously inhabited by Lemurians that used the space for their mystical rituals, and the group decided that the cave should be their first location. They arrived at the mouth of the cave within an hour or so of walking, and without any interruption or issues from the island's inhabitants.
They moved through the cave unhindered for what seemed like hours. Eventually, the plain-looking corridor opened into a large chamber. The walls were lined with glowing runes and the center of the room was occupied by what looked like an enormous altar of some variety. On the top of the plinth, there was what could only be described as an egg. Seeing this, Jetset and the UNTIL soldiers ordered that the expedition be called off and that they should all return to their camp by the jet plane to Millennium City. However, as they turned to leave the chamber, they were met with snarling and bright red eyes. The cave obviously hadn't been abandoned and was still owned by this group of Lemurians. At this moment, everything seemed to flash before Rebecca like a strobe light. She felt a heavy, warm force slam her straight in the chest, and she maintained consciousness just long enough to see Jetset being bound by some kind magical energy and dragged off. Then everything went dark.
When she finally roused, it had been two months since the incident. She lay in the intensive care unit at Mercy Hospital, connected to various machines and drips that were keeping her alive. Another thing that Rebecca noticed was that her body had changed dramatically. Her coloration had darkened to an ashen gray, and her entire form was covered in small, smooth, shiny scales. Seeing herself in such a state sent her into a state of panic, and she fought her way out of the cables and machines with no thought other than getting to a mirror. The nurses had her sedated, and when she awoke a few hours later she was much calmer, though it still took quite some time for her to adjust to her new, reptile-like form.
The whole situation perplexed Rebecca, and she wondered what had happened to Jetset, the UNTIL soldiers and the rest of her club. Surely some of them had to of survived to have brought her unconscious body back to Millennium City, but the staff informed her that her body had just been left outside of the hospital building, and nobody had seen who dropped her off. After making a full recovery from her critical state, Rebecca left the hospital and stepped onto the streets of the city with no clue where to go or what to do next. She first considered flying back home to Los Angeles to tell her parents everything that had happened, but she decided against it with her body being as it was. Her next thought was that she could stay in Millennium, where abnormalities like her were more common than average humans. But what would she do for work?
Rebecca managed to land a job in a Westside garage, repairing and decorating vehicles for a minimum wage. She hated the work with a passion, but it was thanks to the job that she discovered her new powers. Rebecca was refueling a motorbike for a particularly difficult customer when the petrol pump she was using spontaneously combusted, sending metal and plastic flying in huge ball of fire. Standing roughly just five feet away from the explosion, had Rebecca still been fully human, she would certainly have been killed by the blast. However, she stood perfectly still, paralyzed by the fear of what had just happened. When the firefighters and authorities arrived on the scene, everybody that had witnessed the event pointed a finger to Rebecca. She was arrested and taken to the MCPD station for questioning.
After she had told the authorities her entire story, the officers decided to let her go with a caution and a condition; she would be placed in Ravenswood Academy's "Homeroom Alpha" initiative - dedicated to training those with extraordinary abilities to control and perfect their usage for a good cause. Rebecca was quickly given the nickname "Salamander" by her classmates and now patrols the streets of Millennium under that alias, working part time in a drinking establishment in the city's Downtown district.
Appearance
Salamander is a 5'6" humanoid female that weighs in at 115 lbs. Her skin is dark gray with darker markings across her chest, arms and legs. Her eyes are fully black around the outside, and her glowing red irises lack a pupil in the center. The whole of her skin seems to be formed of incredibly smooth, microscopic scales that catch light and reflect it - giving the surface of her 'skin' a moist appearance. Salamander's hair matches the tone of the rest of her body, being black with dark gray stripes and highlights. Her lips are also a darkish gray color, and when parted, one can see two rows of serrated teeth - akin to those of a shark. She can usually be seen wearing simple, casual clothing with nothing but her naturally tough scales and skeletal structure to protect her from danger.
Personality
Rebecca is a kind-hearted, warm person to be around the vast majority of the time, but like almost everybody in the world, she is prone to offensive outbursts and aggressive behavior when pushed too far or struggling greatly with something. Many people find that Rebecca/Salamander is a good friend to have. She's loyal and protective of those close to her, willing to do anything for a friend. She makes an effort to be friends with just about anybody, but those who annoy or upset her or her existing friends are likely to just be ignored. However, if the person in question keeps pushing her, she will snap at them.
It is also worth noting that Rebecca seems to take on an almost completely different personality when in the heat of a fight. Her tone becomes much more serious, and her language can even verge on offensive to allies. As such, she prefers to work by herself - not because she feels like others would just hold her back (in some scenarios she could actually USE assistance) - but because she's worried things could be said to jeopardize a relationship.
Powers
Fire
One of the two reasons(along with her appearance) that her classmates in Ravenswood dubbed her "Salamander", Rebecca is able to utilize an advanced form of fire magic. She can summon flames both for offense and defense, and even utilize them for support when she really must. Members of UNTIL also noted that she is able to form inanimate and animate objects using the flames - the usefulness of said inanimate creations requires citation.
Claws
Salamander's blackened nails are sharp. Incredibly sharp. As such, she utilizes them as a severely effective close-range weapon. Woe to anybody on the receiving end of a 'scratch' from her. As good of a weapon as they are, Salamander generally uses slashing at her enemies with her nails as her preferred method of attack. Her nails are also incredibly durable, so she doesn't need to worry about wearing them down or breaking them.
'Invulnerability'
Salamander's body is immensely tough. The bones that form her skeleton are potentially just as hard as diamond. On top of this, her vital organs are all coated in a thick layer of flesh with a density equivalent to a Kevlar-Questionite blend, providing a nearly impenetrable protective sheath around each. The tiny scales that cover and make up her layer of 'skin' are rather thin, but there are two layers overlapping to increase the thickness and provide extra protection. These scales are completely fire-and-water-proof, and the strength of their protection could be compared to titanium.
