Kanjiro
Kanjiro Kawakami and his little sister Koko lived in the slums of Tokyo with their parents, in a neighborhood particularly infested with corruption and gang violence. On top of the ridiculously high rent, their slumlord had them paying, gangs also took money from them for 'protection', which meant most of the time they had no money for themselves. Despite this, things seemed to be looking up on the night of Kanjiro and Koko's shared birthday celebration when their father seemed to have more money than usual for it, claiming he had received a raise at work. On their way home from their night out (at a very cheap fast food joint), they were set upon by gangsters who claimed their father had neglected to pay for his family's protection. Their fathers attempt to reason with them was quickly cut short as him and their mother was gunned down by the gangsters. In a moment of instinct, Kanjiro grabbed his little sister and began running. The gangsters pursued the two kids, who ducked into an old antique shop. While hiding there he began hearing whispers and was drawn to an old, Black Kabuki mask.
Kirainahito
Thousands of years ago, a demon known as Kirainahito terrorized Japan. He was a demon of truly terrible power who sought to prove to the gods how feeble and corrupt their creation was, and how easily they could be broken. One after the other, champions imbued with gifts from the gods challenged him to single combat, and each time they fell, cursing and forsaking the gods as they did. But when things seemed hopeless, a mortal man named Hikari, the son of a swordsmith challenged the demon, claiming he had crafted a sword imbued with all the power and nobility of man. The two fought and the demon became distraught when he could not break the sword or its wielder, and in the moment of his own doubt, he was dealt a debilitating blow. With his body weakened and his spirit now vulnerable to the magic of the gods, Kirainahito attempted to flee, leaving his physical body to find a new host, but Hikari surprised him one more time, drawing a Kabuki mask from his belongings and performed a ritual to bind the demons spirit to it, ensuring he could not find a new host body, or heal his injured spirit.
