Generally speaking, pirates are criminals that operate on or around large bodies of water and raid bordering towns, cities, or ships. They differ from privateers in that their actions are not condoned by their government. While the word "pirate" usually conjures up images of the high seas, river pirates and Vikings can also fall under this category.
In modern fantasy and science fiction, the sub-genres of Sky Pirate and Space Pirate have also become popular.
