Background and Origin
Base Species Information - Unknown to Most
Ice Bat is a genetically modified animal known as a J'livik. The J'livik are a type of bat-like creatures native to the planet Huldrion orbiting a star in the Monoceros Ring. These creatures, normally active only during the long days of Huldrion, generally get to only around sixteen inches in length with a wing span between 30 and 48 inches.
Due to the arctic temperatures of Huldrion, J'livik live in deep caves that are warmed by a crystal like mineral that generates large amounts of heat as they form. They hunt with a combination of senses that help them navigate their planet. The J'livik lack any form of eyes, and posses no nose or sense of smell. Instead, they have evolved a type of sonar that cuts through the thick atmosphere and allows them to detect obstacles in their path. They posses thermal veins that run along their heads allowing them to pick up the feintest of heat sources and locate prey items that may be disguised in the ice and snow, or hidden by other means. They have an organ in their chest that is sensitive to electromagnetic energies, allowing them to see the aura's surrounding objects both living or dead, and organic and inorganic. This enables them to determine if a creature is friendly or hostile towards them and allows them to determine a creatures mood. The small horn on their heads is sensitive to the ultraviolet range and can detect any disturbance in this wavelength, giving them a limited ability to sense beyond many other creatures ability. These small animals often prey upon larger creatures, swarming in large hordes like a pack of piranha, and stripping the prey to the bone in a matter of minutes.
Ice Bat himself is the result of genetic experimentations by a race of creatures known only as "The Wake" to the galaxy at large. Known for their use of alien species to create hybrid shock troops, none have ever seen a member of "The Wake" and lived to describe them. Their creations, however, litter the universe. Created as an ideal scout, Ice Bat's ability to with-stand the coldest environment and coupled with his species natural senses, made his kind ideal scouts for searching through the stars. Genetically enhanced to need no atmosphere and evolved to grow an organ that can manipulate gravitational wavelengths, they are bred and sent into deep space where they follow any heat source, electromagnetic disturbance or ultraviolet radiation that may lead them to a planetary body.
No one but "The Wake" knows how their scouts communicate back once they have found a planet with life, or what their scouting for. However, Ice Bat has found Earth. He has followed a trail to Paragon City, though none know what he followed exactly, and seems to be staying.
Public knowledge
Various people and departments have attempted to communicate with him and learn his purpose here, he is either unable to communicate this information back, or is unwilling.
He seems drawn to beings that have some sway over the cold, following them like a lost dog and assisting them when he realizes they are in danger. He has occasionally been seeing helping them even when they are not in danger, creating some confusion and often a misunderstanding for the person he is following. He has, on more than one occasion, apparently taken to the belief that a cashier taking money from such a person was a threat and shot razor sharp ice shards at these cashiers and has landed one or two people in jail as they could not control their "pet". Through controlled use of his wings, he has been seen creating whirl-winds of cold air, freezing small animals in place before attacking them and feeding.
Early studiers of this creature believed that, as a creature prone to frozen worlds, he would be highly susceptible to heat. This proved to be in-accurate when, drawn to a smelting room, he plunged his head into the molten metal being poured to form beams and began biting at it. It is presumed he thought it was some type of animal and was determining if it was edible.
