Origin

Deandre Miller was a gifted youth who grew up in a single parent home after his father (Jacob) was murdered coming home from the store. His grandfather (Robert) played a crucial role in his life thereafter, often disciplining him whenever he went astray. One day while preparing his home for a garage sale, Deandre stumbled upon an old chest in the attic with a worn-out costume and tons of memorabilia of a hero known as the Mantis. Deandre confronted his mother (Mary) and grandfather about this, and learned a truth that would change his life forever.

Prior to his death, Deandre's father was a crime-fighter known as the Mantis; and had been trained by Robert, who had acted as the Mantis before Jacob. During a routine patrol Jacob was gravely injured while stopping a group of super-powered criminals. Dying, he contacted Mary and Robert and together they all staged a scene making it look as if Jacob had been wounded by muggers while returning home from the store. Mary and Robert then vowed they would not tell Deandre the truth about his father in hopes that it would prevent him from ever becoming a crime-fighter like his father.

However, now knowing the truth, Deandre was determined to become a hero like his father; and seeing that he could not be deterred his grandfather began training him. He had Deandre complete very demanding physical and mental exercises regularly, and taught him things he had learned during his time as a crime-fighter. Despite having to perform a more strenuous routine, Deandre never developed into as good of a fighter as his father or grandfather, but what he lacked in fighting skill he made up for in intellect and creativity. He also created his own Mantis costume and developed several gadgets and tools to assist him in crime-fighting.

But it wasn't until he turned 18 that Robert allowed Deandre to complete go on his first patrol, with Robert closely overseeing of course.
