Background and Origin

Before he knew what hit him, Kevin Poe was pinned to the ground with two wristblades poking his neck.
"Game over, Poe." said Whisper in a low growl.
"Okay okay! Game over! -- For YOU!" cackled Poe. The villain activated a control hidden in his hand. A machine behind him whirred to life, blasting the hero clear across the room.
"Vinnie, get this... 'hero' out of my sight." said Poe, casually returning to his work.
"Is he... dead?" asked the henchman as he reluctantly lifted the motionless body.
"Yeah yeah, fried brain. Go." replied Poe with a touch of impatience.
The thug complied with the order. The Whisper's body was soon disposed of in the Detroit River.
Meanwhile, at SCITech Industries...
Alicia Chevalier
A man with thick glasses and a labcoat was addressing a pair of nervous parents.
"Please remember Mr and Mrs Chevalier, this treatment is entirely untested on human subjects. Besides that, the cellular damage to her brain is quite extensive. Please don't expect too much from these trials."
They were in what appeared to be more of a laboratory than a hospital room. A young woman in a deep coma was laying on a gurney. Nurses were carefully connecting electrodes to her shaved head when the man in the labcoat approached. He checked various parameters on the computer and adjusted a few electrodes.
"Here goes nothing..." he whispered. The room fell silent as he tapped a green "Execute" button on the computer.
Nothing happened. The room was as silent as a tomb. A chime from the computer finally broke the silence. A second later a nurse sighed, "Well tha..."
She was interrupted when the woman on the table burst up, tearing the electrodes off her head. She looked straight at the man in the labcoat and growled "Where's Poe!?"
