A Brief Explanation
Kismet started off as my first Kheldian character in CoH. At the time, the In-Betweener was involved in a RP relationship with a blaster named Lola Lionheart. The Peacebringer powers made her the perfect amalgam of IB's and Lola's powers. So she was brought in as his daughter from a future time and another dimension, which will be explained more below. She eventually took over his role as Guardian of Time and Space in CoH, as IB had to eventually leave in order for her to come about. So IB left in order for Time to continue along the path that it was supposed to. This was, in essence, his retirement as a character as he'd been 50 for a couple of years and there was nothing much else for him to do. Their family history has been Retconned for Champions in that IB still resides in this dimension as the Guardian and Vanessa has not yet taken over his role.
A Brief History
Vanessa Kyle's history starts in another dimension and a future time. When her father, The In-Betweener retired to another dimension he settled down and married. He had been tired of the constant fighting in this dimension and found one where there were no super-heroes. Vanessa's mother died in child birth, so she was raised by Sebastian Kyle as a single parent. She knew him in his late 40's; a tired, worn down man who seemed to simply exist and spent long hours locked away in his private study.
To all outside appearances she was a normal teenage girl. Beatiful, outgoing, flirty, and smart. No one except her father suspected that she had been born with powers. Powered heroes didn't exist in her world. But her father knew that her powers far outstripped his. She was an incredibly powerful Telepath and Telekinetic. She also inherited her father's ability to Teleport, though that power fell far below her father's ability. She attended school but became increasingly aloof as her telepathy grew more powerful and she wasn't trained in its use. She began to read everybody's surface thoughts reflexively.
One night she wandered into her father's study when he accidentally left the door unlocked. The room was bathed in a blue light. She gasped as her father turned to face her and his eyes glowed a brilliant blue. She had never seen her father's eyes like that. He put the special contacts back into his eyes and they returned to their normal soulful brown color. She looked around the room; it was covered in newspaper clippings and souvenirs from his career as a hero. He sat her down and explained everything to her. She told him about her troubles and he helped her refine her abilities.
She looked at the tired man her father had become and at the youthful vibrant person that he had been in the stories from his private sanctuary. She decided then that she was going to correct whatever had gone wrong in his past. She used her Teleportation to travel into this dimension, but her inexperience landed her nearly twenty five years in the past as well as in an alien dimension.
She found herself a stranger in a strange land. She hadn't been born yet, wasn't trained fully in the use of her abilities. The only course of action that she could come up with would be to seek her father out and confess everything. Surprisingly Sebastian wasn't surprised, as he felt her come into this dimension and knew the truth of everything before she did. He also saw the truth of her 'mistake' and refused to travel along the timeline to find exactly where she came from. So the In-Betweener now has a 21 year old daughter that he hasn't had yet, with a woman whom neither of them know who it is, in another place.
Personality
Vanessa is a very outgoing, vibrant and passionate young woman. She has a devious streak as well and enjoys giving her dad trouble. She's loving seeing the man that he used to be as opposed to the shell that he'd become in her own time. She's almost stereotypical in her exploits outside of being a superhero. She loves shopping and going to the clubs. On the other side of the coin she can be very businesslike and serious when she needs to be. She can look at most situations with a very clinical outlook. She almost seems to pick every situation apart with an ability that borders on precognition. She can very quickly analyze a situation and plot out the next several courses of action.
She puts out this persona in a large part to cover up some of the pain that she feels due to her powers. She is still able to pick out the surface thoughts of those around her. So she can see the seething cesspool that some people's minds are. She doesn't date often for the same reason. Being able to involuntarily pick out the surface thoughts of her dates sours her quickly, so she tends to keep to herself in that regard.
Powers
Vanessa's powers are varied and diverse, not lending easily to categorization. She is an incredibly powerful telepath. She has learned to focus her telekinesis into a razor-fine point, using it mostly to manifest psychic weapons to fight with. She can also lift incredibly heavy weights with her mind. She's able to teleport incredible distances, but most often uses her telekinesis to fly if she only has to travel a short distance. She has a small amount of Empathy, able to absorb others' pain in order to heal damage.
The Present
Vanessa has had a busy couple of months. She's been dating a man named Max Winters, who own Winters Corp. She's recently moved in with him, still waiting for the other shoe to drop considering her past experience with boyfriends. She's also recently quit her job at Pat's coffee and taken on a position as School Counselor at Halcyon Academy. She might not realize the ride that she's in for yet
Trivia
- Kismet is Vanessa's middle name. It was apparently given to her as Sebastian felt that it had been Kismet that he had found her mother in the other dimension.
- Vanessa's powers are greater than the sum of her parents' powers. As such she has a difficult time controlling them precisely.
- Vanessa's costume is a very calculated act of rebellion. The short skirt and bustier drives her father insane, feeling that she's putting out the wrong signals.
