+ | '''Mah Ye Ling''' (Chinese Translation: 馬 易 玲) also known as '''Yeling "The Tidalflame" Mah''' is the thirteenth Dogma Holder for '''Hinokami, the God of Fire''', a spectral entity that made up the flames of '''The Great Akuma''' and is the current '''Celestial Dragon Rain God''', succeeding '''Shenlong the God of Rain'''.
+ | Originally a terrorist serving the Contingency Initiative under '''Matthew "The Mirage" Lam''' and '''Elimination Squad Four''', Yeling completed contracts as '''Tidalflame, the Chinese Terrorist'''. A destroyer with mass genocidal powers, Yeling's reputation was so feared that his name became an international threat, such that even those in remote areas such as Arii and Cobblestone knew all about his exploits. After CI's downfall and Transplant's rise in power, Yeling became an adventurer with close friends '''Shia Megumi''', '''Inoko the Berserker''', and '''God of Rain Shenlong'''. Decoupled from the Dogma, Yeling's life became liberated from The Great Akuma, however, his main prerogative remained to take down Transplant and provide a fair world. After defeating Transplant, Yeling discovered that his younger sister was alive and that she was part of the '''Black Legion Organization'''.
− | + | When '''Inner Shadow Loyce Hal''' ordered the retrieval of Yeling as part of his plan, Yeling was forced to break all ties with his friends. Loyce gave Yeling a choice as to how each and every one of the friends and allies he gained would leave his life forever. Yeling's choice would be to allow each ally to live a life forced by Loyce's reality creation ability where Yeling never existed, essentially erasing memories of his presence in each and every one of his loved ones. Yeling would spend two years watching his friends live their lives without him in it - with most of this time spent watching Shia grow up. These two years caused Yeling to grow distant towards forming new connections with '''Aaron Hope''' and his Auxiliary Shadows, for fear that he would lose them too.
− | ''' | + | |
+ | He is the older brother of '''Mah Ha Kah''', an extremely powerful Inner Shadow to '''Lord Ginga''', and the current Dogma Holder for '''Susanoo, the God of Storms'''. Yeling and Hakah are the only remaining survivors of the Mah Bloodline. Yeling is currently gaining strength, serving as an Auxiliary Shadow to '''Vicki Harriet''', and reporting to Inner Shadow '''Loyce Hal''', in hopes of rising up the ranks, defeating Loyce and Vala, and continuing with the mission of bringing a fair world to all realities through the Akuma's power.
− | ''' | + | In the Champions Universe, Yeling, like '''Twilight Bolt''', acts as Vicki Harriet's sidekick, and is given the alias '''Cobalt''', similar to how Vicki is known as '''Lens'''. Like his Outer Shadow, Yeling's power is significantly reduced to be in line with the entities of the world and is capped at Level 40. As a Level 40 Champion, Yeling only has access to Hinokami, and can at most call upon 3.8 percent of Stage One, his role being a Fire DPS. By wielding Tatsu and Rain Style, his role can also serve double as a melee DPS. In terms of combat proficiency, Yeling's skill is enough to raid '''Teleios Ascendent''', though not sufficient to raid '''Therakiel's Temple'''. |
− | When Yeling | + | When Yeling was in disguise along with Aaron Hope, Aaron forced the identity of '''Buddy Sanders''' to Yeling, with the cover story that Yeling was an apprentice to Aaron in hopes of fulfilling his dream to become a pimp at '''Club Caprice''', much to Yeling's chagrin. Whenever Yeling is reminded of his "Buddy Sanders" alter ego, he becomes incredibly angry. |
− | + | Yeling is the secondary protagonist of '''He Saves Gods as a Man''', and is the main protagonist of '''The Story of Yeling Mah''' and '''Beyond the Gods - The Strongest Hinokami'''.

+ | Yeling is a young man with a somewhat short stature (standing at 5 foot 7 inches). According to Marcela Greene, Yeling's face is average for a Chinese male, neither attractive nor unattractive, however, he possesses unnaturally bright blue eyes, similar to topaz, which glow in the dark, and glow in the light whenever Yeling uses his powers. Yeling is bald and does not have any hair on his head, but prior to initiating his Level 2 Dogma Bargain, Yeling had short black hair in the form of a fade.
− | + | One of the most defining features of Yeling's appearance, which has caused him to be extremely self-conscious, is his severe facial deformity on the right side of his face and head. In a flashback, it is revealed that this deformity was his exchange when he initiated his Level 2 Dogma Bargain for Intangibility, in which half of his face caught on fire, leaving behind scorched flesh in the process. Yeling describes his right side as "hideous", and consisting of scarred darkened cracked tissue. As with the rest of his right side, Yeling's right eye is constantly bloodshot. Yeling covers his right side with a black wig, giving him an angsty teenage appearance whenever he is in disguise. Yeling wore the wig during the first few weeks Marcela stayed with Squad Four, for fear that his appearance would frighten her. Eventually, Marcela discovered Yeling's right side, and Yeling stopped wearing the wig whenever she was around.
− | Yeling | + | |
− | + | Running down the left side of his face, all the way to his left palm, are numerous angular navy blue tattoos denoting his Level 1 HInokami Dogma Bargain. In finer detail, these tattoos actually consist of runic demonic lettering representing the Dogma Bargain. After unlocking Hinokami Stage Two, the tattoos became even more complex, branching off and giving an appearance somewhat resembling that of circuitry.
− | + | During missions, Yeling dons the standard Contingency Initiative robes, which consists of a black and crimson trench coat, that covers his arms and most of his body. Underneath the coat, Yeling wears a black t-shirt and black cargo pants. On his neck, is a jade necklace. When in mission, Yeling also wears a black kevlar Contingency Initiative combat mask, which covers the right side of his face, and his mouth. The mask is decorated with grey contours of a skull, with the skull teeth lining the padding where his mouth would be. The mask also possesses some swirling contours near the back of his head, which transition into flame patterns, which represent his codename.
− | + | When outside, Yeling wears more casual streetwear, consisting of trousers and a light-coloured hoodie. Yeling's necklace is concealed within his shirt, but the strings that attach the jade are visible around his neck. In addition to the wig that covers the right side of his face, Yeling also wears contact lenses that change the color of his irises back to their original brown from before Yeling unlocked Hinokami. Yeling describes his casual outfit and disguise as "emo", but claims that the appearance is the way it is to prevent him from being recognized as Tidalflame when in public.
− | + | ===Part II and III===
+ | After Yeling's first battle against Danny, his right hand was severed, his power was reduced, and he lost his connection to the Dogma. This resulted in Yeling's right half to be healed, and his hair to grow out during the four year time skip. However, after failing a test from Tianlong, Yeling's original appearance returned. At this point, Yeling, now in his early twenties, showed signs of maturation, including a more chiseled face, and toned muscles.
− | + | ===Part IV=== | |
+ | Following Yeling's second battle against Danny, Yeling's right eye was slashed out, and the ring finger on his left arm was crushed, forcing him to cut it off. At this point, Yeling's body has become matured and possesses an athletic toned physique.
− | + | When in his magical disguise after the time skip, Yeling is depicted to have long black hair reaching his shoulders and eyes similar to his mother, a chiseled face similar to his father. Yeling also donned a black leather jacket with a light coloured fur at the collar on top of a grey t-shirt, and dark grey jeans. A pair of fingerless gloves are fitted on his hands to allow him to wield his weapons. On his back is '''Tatsu''', Aelienne's longsword, and around his right forearm is his Chainblade, which is a long chain with a blade attached at the end.
− | * '''Level | + | Later on, after Shin uses Time Displacement on Yeling to speed his recovery after the titanic battle, Yeling's hair grows out naturally to shoulder length, and his appearance from his magical disguise becomes his actual appearance, with the exception of his scars on his right side. Yeling now has his long hair tied back in a ponytail, his long bangs reaching his chin and covering his right side. Rui then provided Yeling with a magical eye prosthetic, '''Floki''' to replace the eye that he lost. |

+ | |||
+ | As a descendent of '''Mahyako''', and by extension, '''The Great Akuma''' herself, Yeling is exceptionally powerful, and the limits of his strength are currently unknown. The rate at which Yeling accumulates power throughout the story is unfathomably high, as at the start of '''He Kills Gods as a Man''', Yeling was said to fight on the level of a C Rank Auxiliary Shadow as Stage Four. However, by the time Yeling is reintroduced in '''He Saves Gods as a Man II''', Yeling's combat proficiency skyrockets to the level of High Tier SS Rank, and later, Elite Tier SS Rank with the reveal of his new Hinokami Stage, and the return of Shenlong's Rain God powers. Essentially wielding the powers of both a '''Fire God''' and a '''Rain God''', Yeling possesses '''dual elemental attributes''', much like Vicki Harriet's '''Perfect Balance'''.
+ | |||
+ | Yeling has fought toe to toe with extremely powerful and iconic godly beings, such as the Chinese Water God/Dragon '''Kanghui''' (Gonggong), the heavenly dragon '''Tianlong''', numerous '''Demon Lords''', the entire forces of '''Hell''' and the legendary fallen angel '''Lucifer''' himself - even temporarily overwhelming the devil and changing the entire climate of hell from the sheer heat of his flames. When Yeling had his narrative reset by Loyce, the last son of Mahyako was able to completely overpower an injured Aaron Hope and his Auxiliary Shadows, including High Tier S+ Ranked '''Sarah Ultear''', Elite Tier S+ Ranked '''Bryce Jones''', and B Ranked '''Robbie "X8" Fernandez'''.
+ | |||
+ | Yeling's powers are so potent that they are capable of ripping through reality itself, and completely nullifying reality-warping effects, making him an ideal opponent to Loyce's '''Alogigenesis'''.
+ | |||
+ | Due to Yeling's incredible combat proficiency, he is one of the three potential top fighters in the story's battle against '''Great Demon Lord Loyce Hal''', alongside Elite Tier SS Ranked '''Aaron Hope''', and Elite Tier SS Ranked '''Great Demon Lord Kon Larum'''. Of the three powerhouses, Yeling possesses the second-highest firepower, but is the most versatile, as Kon Larum's '''Alstroemeria''' is dependent on his emotional state which can vary.
+ | |||
+ | In the prophetic scribes of The Black Legion, Yeling is hinted to be a member of '''The Dark Hexagram''' - his alias being '''The Nova'''. However, it is not confirmed if The Nova is indeed Yeling.
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | '''The Dogma of Equivalent Exchange''': Yeling was initially bound to the Dogma, sacrificing to the proxy in exchange for access to The Great Akuma's power. The stronger the power, the greater the sacrifice. However, unlike other Dogma holders, due to being a direct descendent of the Akuma herself, The Dogma sought to give Yeling more power to gain his allegiance, over the allegiance to Mahyako, who sought to use the Dogma for personal gain. After merging his flames with Aelienne, the First Hinokami Holder, Yeling became free from the Dogma, meaning he is able to tap into even more of the Akuma's power. As of now, Yeling has been able to unlock five stages of Level 1 Hinokami, while the original limit was Stage Two.
+ | * '''Level 1 Hinokami''': The first Level of Yeling's Dogma is an '''Akuma Grade''', meaning Yeling manifests a direct aspect of the Akuma herself. In Yeling's case, he inherited The Devil's Flames, an overwhelming celestial godly fire far surpassing normal flame and fire magic. Depending on how much is channeled, the Hinokami can distort and even incinerate reality itself, nullifying reality-warping and narrative-bending effects. The nature of Hinokami is unknown, however, the sheer overload of heat energy allows Yeling to execute planetary levels of power before training with Hakah. By the time Yeling reached SS Rank, the destructiveness of his flames are currently incalculable. The exchange for the power of the Fire God was Yeling's first family - his mother, father, and at the time, his younger sister. When the Hinokami first manifested from Yeling's tattoos, the flames went out of control and incinerated all of his family members, with his mother being turned to ash in his arms. Due to the tremendous power of the Hinokami, the sacrifice had to be costly, and this would prove true as the exchange left long-term psychological damage to Yeling through severe PTSD.
+ | ** '''Hinokami Stage Two: Cobalt Assimilation''': By honing the powers of the Hinokami even further to the point of infusing each and every cell with flames, Yeling's entire body becomes an essence of fire - allowing him to channel his power far more streamlined than his base form. At Stage Two, Yeling's sheer destructive potential became strong enough to destroy a country and fight on par with '''Urca the Slicer'''. Following his Mah Bloodline awakening, Yeling's Stage Two is comparable to a Stage Four Akuma Grade Dogma.
+ | ** '''Hinokami Stage Three: Grand Cobalt Assimilation''': Unlocked from offering his allegiance to becoming the Dogma's Champion, Stage Three takes the Hinokami even further - overloading not just his cells with flames but also his very soul. At Stage Three, Yeling's destructive potential became continental, strong enough to vaporize a celestial dragon with a single blast. Following his Mah Bloodline awakening, Yeling's Stage Three surpasses a fully powered Stage Four Aelienne.
+ | ** '''Hinokami Stage Four: Cobalt Phoenix Ascendent''': Unlocked from merging his flames with Aelienne's, Yeling's firepower is equivalent to two Hinokami users in destructive potential, making his power multi-continental to planetary. Following his Mah Bloodline awakening, Yeling unlocks his version of Full Power Stage Four.
+ | ** '''Hinokami Full Power Stage Four: True Phoenix Ascendent''': Yeling's version of the Full Power Stage Four differs from Aelienne as it returns to its original blue. The power of the flames far surpasses Aelienne's in power, making him the current undisputed strongest Hinokami user in history. Full Power Stage Four is capable of warping and melting ''reality itself''.
+ | ** '''Hinokami Stage Five: Dead Man's Pact''': Stage Five is the only stage that does not follow the naming terminology of "Cobalt", marking Yeling's divergence from his linear path to gaining power. Incorporating all of his powers together including his Level 2 Intangibility and Rain God powers, Stage Five is so powerful that Yeling was capable of changing the entire climate of '''Hell''' just by its aura, and overpowering '''Lucifer''' himself in a battle of flames. Dead Man's Pact was so powerful, that in this state, Yeling was able to not just call upon Aelienne's Phoenix Covenant, but summon thousands upon thousands of a gargantuan-sized version of it. This is the strongest stage Yeling has achieved thus far. Paired with Anarchy Form, Yeling's destructive ability is what places him on '''Elite Tier SS Rank''' among the likes of '''Aaron Hope''' and '''Kon Larum'''.
+ | * '''Level 2 Intangibility''': The second Level of Yeling's Dogma is a normal-grade Dogma Bargain. The power manifests itself by converting Yeling's entire body into an intangible entity of wispy flame, making him invulnerable to practically any physical damage whatsoever. The exchange for this power involved scorching the right side of Yeling's face and leaving behind hideous, burnt flesh, irreparable and causing many to flinch upon seeing it. The reason behind this specific type of trade-off was that Yeling was initially extremely insecure about his appearance prior to the bargain. By taking half his face, all chances of Yeling finding love, at least from his perspective, would be shattered.
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | '''Blessing of the Last Son - Anarchy Form'''
+ | <div align="center">
+ | "''Listen, Yeling. This form you have achieved. It is one of your most powerful weapons. An unstoppable golem of pure might and power. As Tidalflame, you were an unstoppable torrent of vengeance. But as Anarchy, you are beyond even that. You are... an Arbiter. An Arbiter of Destruction. In this transformation, you are looking at a four thousand percentile increase in power. But this multiplier has its limits. In this state, the more you use it, the more of the Great Akuma's flames will course through your brain. Your neurons and nervous system will disintegrate. You will cease to be yourself. Your morals. Your humanity. What makes Yeling Mah, Yeling Mah...''
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | ''Will be no longer.''"
+ | |||
+ | - The Dogma warning Yeling about the Anarchy Form
+ | </div> | ||
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | As a descendent of The Great Akuma through the Mahyako bloodline, Yeling is also capable of drawing upon the Akuma's body similar to how his sister is capable of manifesting through her '''Chaos''' and '''Tempest''' Forms. In Yeling's case, he is able to manifest the Akuma's aspect of '''Anarchy'''. In this form, Yeling creates a massive demonic golem of pure Hinokami Flame, which is reinforced by the dark energy of the Dogma. The size of the golem is mammoth, as it towers even nearby mountains. Anarchy Form is called an additional transformation on top of his Hinokami Stages, meaning he can access the form even when transformed into one of his Stages during battle.
+ | |||
+ | <div align="center">
+ | "''I didn't need my friends. I wanted strength. I wanted power. I want it.
+ | |||
+ | ''If I don't have friends.''
+ | |||
+ | ''If I don't have loved ones.''
+ | |||
+ | ''That is where I am strongest.''
+ | |||
+ | ''Destroy it all.''" | ||
+ | |||
+ | - Yeling losing himself to rage from the Anarchy Form
+ | </div> | ||
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | The power of the Anarchy Form was so potent that it instantly closed the gap between pre-awakened Stage Three Yeling and a Stage Two Aelienne, who was severely overpowering the former. The mere shockwaves of the Anarchy Form are enough to knock out enemies and land critical hits through collateral damage. While in Anarchy Form, Yeling's fighting style becomes far more aggressive and primal, swinging wildly as the Hinokami Flame courses through his body, and slowly disintegrates his nervous system - this causes Yeling to temporarily lose most of his cognitive function, falling into a mindless berserker rage. The higher stage Anarchy Form is called, the faster Yeling loses himself.
+ | |||
+ | As the story progresses, Yeling learns to control the Anarchy Form, and is able to call upon Anarchy Form in Stage Five without significant drawbacks, but Yeling notes that his fighting style is still very reckless and wild despite retaining cognitive ability in the transformation.
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | '''Celestial Dragon God Physiology''': Yeling currently possesses all of the power of the Celestial Dragon '''Shenlong, the God of Rain'''. Transplanted onto his body by Great Demon Lord Loyce Hal, Yeling has now become the next Celestial Rain Dragon, replacing Shenlong. As a Celestial Dragon, Yeling's body has become akin to a dragon's physiology.
+ | * '''Immense Strength''': Yeling's strength rivals Shenlong's full power in human form - as Yeling has proven to be capable of slicing entire landforms with ease using Tatsu, and picking up a grown man with one hand without any effort whatsoever. Though not to the same level as Kon Larum's, Yeling's physical strength is more comparable to a god's.
+ | * '''Immense Durability and Endurance''': Yeling's durability has been significantly enhanced since becoming a Celestial Dragon - as he has proven to be capable of surviving a Vala Enhanced Grond's double overhand strike, as well as withstanding continuous injuries from the forces of Hell, yet continue fighting for many hours on end.
+ | * '''Divine Amplification''': Channeling the amplification properties of Shenlong's Rainwater, Yeling's physical abilities are amplified exponentially, increasing both his strength and speed substantially.
+ | * '''Way of the Rain God''': When Shenlong was a Celestial Dragon, the entity lived for centuries. During these centuries worth, Shenlong battled many warriors and beings, each challenging the Dragon with a unique style or ability. Those centuries of battle experience have now been transplanted into Yeling's memories, allowing Yeling to tap into a style known as the '''Way of the Rain God''' - a fighting technique far superior to any known combat techniques due to being honed in from eons of consistent fighting against a wide variety of opponents.
+ | ** '''Rain Style Kenjutsu''': Wielding Tatsu, Yeling executes the Rain Style Kenjutsu style - a fighting style that consists of ten forms, emphasizing wide and elegant sweeps similar to the flow of water. When combining this with his Hinokami, Yeling is able to access his '''Devil Rain Style''' variant, which adds Hinokami flame to his attacks. Rain Style Kenjutsu involves coating the blade with the violent storms of the Rain God for every form.
+ | *** '''Form 1 - Surface Slash''': A horizontal slash which either slices his target or slices them from the shockwaves of the arc. The arc is also enhanced by Celestial Rainwater.
+ | *** '''Form 2 - Sun Wheel''': A powerful vertical slash that is used when the user is above the opponent. The move was once used on Atlas, an Actiorione which boasts incredible durability, as evidenced when the monster was capable of withstanding the strikes of the Berserker Inoko.
+ | *** '''Form 3 - Laminar Downpour''': Unleashing a series of timely executing slashes in a winding motion, Yeling corkscrews to his opponent and releases a flow of destruction. The move shreds a large area, but is prone to being countered due to the openings it introduces. Yeling does not use this Form often.
+ | *** '''Form 4 - Rainbow Mirage''': Yeling creates an illusion of either himself, or his weapon, and appears behind his opponent, confusing them.
+ | *** '''Form 5 - Flashrain''': Yeling executes a fast and instant slash similar to an Iai Slash. Requires significant concentration.
+ | *** '''Form 6 - Vortex Slash''': Spinning violently, Yeling emits a tremendous vortex that either pushes enemies away or sucks them in, entering the blade of his sword. A crowd-controlling or crowd-dispersing ability. A similar ability is found in the Dual Wield tree of the Champions Universe, which is a popular move for melee fighters when battling the enemies of '''Therakiel's Temple'''.
+ | *** '''Form 7 - Sharp Winds''': Yeling executes a powerful thrust, which blasts wind pressure and Celestial Rainwater frontally and decimates the target with precision.
+ | *** '''Form 8 - Four Seasons''': Four Seasons is a move that consists of four perfectly timed and positioned slashes, with the intention of putting his opponent on the defensive for the first two or three slashes and binding them in a position where they are unable to dodge the third and fourth slash. This move managed to fool '''Demon Lord Alciel''', who could not dodge the fourth slash and was nicked in the face.
+ | *** '''Form 9 - Clear Sunny Skies''': Yeling executes a series of elegant movements, building momentum and Rainwater, as he shoots to the sky, clearing anything in the air. Form 9 typically chains to Form 10, or Form 2.
+ | *** '''Form 10 - Peace after the Flood''': Yeling unleashes a giant Rainwater explosion, as Celestial Rainwater falls from above. Depending on how much Rainwater is stored, the bigger the explosion. When chained with Form 9, the explosion is gargantuan and the after rain was enough to melt the ice of a Borean.
+ | ** '''Devil Rainstyle Kenjutsu''': Yeling combines his Rain Style with Hinokami. Doing so creates Devil variants of his ten forms, but also introduces new moves.
+ | *** '''Devil's Beneficient Severence''': Yeling delivers a devastating finisher slash, the storms of Shenlong's power amplifying his momentum and overall damage, and the flames of Hinokami turning the blade white hot, increasing its cutting power substantially. It is said that the slash parts targets on the atom-splitting level, with the energy emitted from the atom fission contained through the Rainwater Storms.
+ | *** '''Devil's Meteor Waterfall''': A highly advanced variant of Form 2 - Sun Wheel, Yeling delivers a downwards slash by first infusing his sword with Hinokami, then generating a powerful storm around the blade through Shenlong's power.
+ | ** '''Chinese Slash Dance''': A fighting technique that involves the Chinese polearm or knives. The style does not involve any forms, the Chinese Slash Dance is more of a fluid fighting style involving the use of elegant and continuous slashes. The technique is best used against legions of enemies, as Yeling used the Chinese Slash Dance to decimate legions of enemies in Hell.
+ | ** '''Shuiquan - Six Harmonies Rain Boxing''': An empty handed fighting style that inspires greatly on Shaolin Wushu, the style involving combining six harmonies and eight methods. The six harmonies involve: body and mind, mind and intent, intent and chi, chi and spirit, spirit and movement, and movement and emptiness. The eight methods include chi, bone, shape, follow, rise, return, retain, and conceal. The Shuiquan technique was what allowed Yeling to fight on equal terms of '''Matthew "The Mirage" Lam''', who was known for the longest time to be one of the best hand to hand fighters in the Great Akuma Series.
+ | * '''Arsenal of the Rain God''': By concentrating the memories of Shenlong's centuries worth of experience in battle, Yeling is able to summon Rainwater Constructs of the common weapons that Shenlong's Rain Style incorporates.
+ | ** '''Twin Butterflies''': Yeling summons two Butterfly Knives, which call upon the Chinese Slash Dance style.
+ | ** '''Nine Section Chain Whip''': Yeling summons a nine sectioned whip, which also calls upon the Chinese Slash Dance style.
+ | *** '''Wrath of the Storm: Ninety Nine Sections Chain Assault''': By calling upon eleven Nine Section Chain Whips in tandem, Yeling is able to wield a larger variant of his Chain Whip, and unleash wide area damage through Chinese Slash Dance.
+ | ** '''Guandao''': A polearm that is designed for precise, long-range, melee attacks.
+ | * '''Holy Rain Renewal''': By coursing the Celestial Rainwater in his body, Yeling gains a continuous '''healing factor''', which cannot be nullified due to being divine in nature. Holy Rain Renewal also cleanses Yeling of any poison, toxic chemicals, and any anti-narrative powers to some degree.

+ | ==Personality== | ||
+ | ===Before Time Skip===
+ | "''Did you like downplaying my situation?''
+ | |||
+ | ''All of you?'' | ||
+ | |||
+ | ''Did you enjoy it when you told me my suicidal thoughts meant nothing?''
+ | |||
+ | ''Did you enjoy telling me my physical health didn't matter?''"
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | Yeling's personality has been described to be very self-victimizing by a number of people who knew him prior to becoming a Hinokami Vessel. A recurring theme behind Yeling's actions have been an act of vengeance from what he perceives as the world being against him. Yeling's belief stems from his inability to find a niche which welcomes him, due to being a foreigner in New Ulysses, Yeling constantly suffered racial discrimination, both to him and his loved ones, leaving him extremely bitter about the social system around him.
+ | |||
+ | It is revealed that Yeling possessed some semblance of diligence, as shown when Yeling had spent his freshmen year enrolled in college, however, due to his depression, the heavy course load proved too much for him, causing his mental health to further deteriorate. Unable to meet deadlines, Yeling found himself constantly in conflict with his peers, who claimed his mental illness was not an excuse to get anything done. As a result, by the time Yeling had reached his final months of freshmen year, his thoughts of depression quickly spiralled into thoughts of self harm and self destruction.
+ | |||
+ | When Yeling unlocked Hinokami, his powers went out of control, and unintentionally killed his entire family. The horrific accident left a long and painful impact on Yeling through the form of PTSD and a number of other psychological problems which would manifest in the form of mass killing and terrorist acts. In addition to his inability to forgive others, when Squad Four was assigned the Elimination Op of his old university, Yeling was the first to accept, and found joy in slaughtering his old classmates in cold blood.
+ | |||
+ | Despite being a mass murderer, Yeling possessed some degree of sympathy and remorse, after realizing that while he had killed almost all of his old classmates, there were some students who were probably in the same place as he did, which was proof that Yeling still had some degree of humanity left behind. Additionally, Yeling has had lapses of second thoughts during his missions, something that his Squad Leader, Mirage would scold him for. Even so, Yeling has fully accepted his role as an operative to the Contingency Initiative, believing that to kill meant to advance the Second War, and all the blood on his hands are ultimately justified.
+ | |||
+ | To Yeling, Squad Four acts as his surrogate family, seemingly replacing the original one he lost. However, it is noted that Yeling still holds fond memories of his time spent with his mother, father, and little sister.
+ | |||
+ | Out of everybody in Squad Four, Yeling is ironically the most reluctant to take lives, with the exception of Marcela Greene.
+ | |||
+ | Due to his inability to socialize, Yeling has multiple times been called out for being socially awkward, and is unable to speak to girls. Additionally, because of this inexperience, Yeling has admitted that he is attracted to practically every girl who is nice to him.
+ | |||
+ | ===After Time Skip===
+ | "''If I had gone back in time and knew that things would turn around... Would my reasons to bring back The Great Akuma still exist?''"
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | After the four year time skip, Yeling's personality becomes noticeably more mature. Although he still harbours deep hatred for people, Yeling recognizes that this hatred was in fact out of envy and jealousy. Yeling retains his hot bloodedness, especially when he must deal with Shenlong's antics, however, he does keep a responsible mindset, especially when it comes to Shia, who he sees as a little kid.
+ | |||
+ | Yeling is uncomfortable with children, rarely ever interacting with them, and frequently refers to them as "brats".
+ | |||
+ | Following his adventures with Shia, Inoko, and Shenlong, Yeling developed feelings for Inoko. However, after discovering that Inoko did not reciprocate these feelings, Yeling became very depressed. During this time, the words that Lewis had told him four years ago resurfaced, claiming that due to Yeling's horrific sins as a mass murderer, his burnt right side, and his personality would lead to him being unable to find love. Believing he would be alone forever, Yeling fell into despair and was tempted by the Dogma to return to him and be his champion.
+ | |||
+ | Even during the events of Part IV, Yeling's overwhelming feelings of loneliness takes a noticeable toll on his mental health, to the point where his jealousy and envy cause him to lash out whenever people speak about their soulmates and partners. As shown when Yeling and Aelienne spoke in the Hinokami Plane, Yeling angrily revealed to Aelienne that he hated it whenever she talked about her husband and children, believing that they were purposely looking down on him for being alone and unloved.
+ | |||
+ | One of Yeling's most redeeming qualities is his loyalty to his friends. To the point where he would openly admit anything that he has hidden to make sure they would be okay. An example of this was during Inoko's test in Tianlong's Celestial Plane, where Inoko's older sister Inko berated her for being useless and an embarrassment to her. Seeing Inoko overwhelmed and in desperate need for support, Yeling gave her words of encouragement without hesitation.
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | ===He Saves Gods as a Man===
+ | "''And as I watched Shia turn around to look at me. The one person who stood out from the crowd of high schoolers in uniforms...''
+ | |||
+ | ''The one person who was covered in scars, with a sword strapped to his back originally owned by the person he had killed...''
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | ''I knew from the bottom of my heart that she could never sense me.''
+ | |||
+ | ''Shia ran in my direction. A laugh and smile on her face, as she ran right through me.''
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | ''Our expressions complete polar opposites of one another.''"
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | When Yeling was captured by Vicki Harriet and Tommy Riordan, Great Demon Lord Loyce Hal made Yeling choose how each and every person who he cared about would leave his life forever. Yeling decided to request Loyce to create realities for each of his friends where they could live their dreams, but without ever remembering that Yeling had existed in their lives. Because of essentially losing yet another group of friends and allies, and being forced to watch them live their lives happily without him for two straight years, Yeling became extremely distant and reluctant to form new bonds of friendship, despite no longer harboring the same feelings of jealousy and resentfulness that he once had. The reason was that Yeling feared another event where he would have to part ways and be left alone once more.
+ | |||
+ | Yeling's personality became hostile, darker, somber, and more serious, similar to his mentor, Matthew Lam. When Yeling first met Outer Shadow '''Aaron Hope''', the two men were not on good terms, as their personalities were direct contrasts from one another. Yeling found Aaron's goofy and troublemaker personality irritating, and frequently berated the younger Shadow and called him a "dolt" whenever Aaron would tease him. At one point, when Aaron tried to hug Yeling after Yeling had returned from Hell, Yeling openly lost his composure and yelped out loud. Of the two, Yeling can be considered "the adult". Though Aaron would be more empathetic and open towards others, while Yeling would remain hostile to people he is not familiar with.
+ | |||
+ | Despite all this, Yeling respected Aaron, recognizing his good deeds and acts of kindness, and showed gratefulness to the Outer Shadow for helping his little sister recover from her trauma. As the two spent more time together, Yeling openly admitted that Aaron was "a good person", while he himself "was not" when Aaron became depressed after having an emotional argument with his fiancee, Sarah Ultear. When Aaron lost his second Auxiliary Shadow, '''Robbie Fernandez''', after he had sacrificed himself in a last-ditch effort to defeat a Vala Enhanced Grond, Aaron became so distraught that he went against his philosophy of hating gods to consider accepting godhood so that he could no longer feel emotional pain. Seeing Aaron was hurting, Yeling came to visit the Outer Shadow and offered to drive him to '''Arii''', where Yeling showed Aaron how to pay his respects to his fallen comrades and move on from their deaths properly.
+ | |||
+ | When speaking to Loyce at the '''Church of Babel''', Yeling told the Demon Lord that Aaron was "the hero" of the story, and that he would take the required role of the opposite, believing that in the end, there was no opportunities left for him to play the role of "a good person".

+ | ==Trivia== | ||
+ | * The original Yeling Mah was intended to join the Stormwatch Brigade under the codename "Cobalt". This story was later revised as the plot didn't seem to go anywhere.
+ | ** In this alternate storyline, "Cobalt" would also inherit Matthew Vistara's Vision Uniform, and would instead try to make amends with the rest of Realmwatch by proving himself to be an ally to good.
+ | ** In the alternate storyline, Yeling unlocks Stage Four by sheer emotions, and actually ends up defeating Hakah and saving her, but Hakah is reverted into a child form. Working with Stormwatch, the story would center around Yeling trying to find a way to revert his sister back to normal. This plot was later abandoned as it was too similar to Demon Slayer.
+ | ** In the alternate storyline, Yeling's Stage Four is known as '''Grand Ultimate Cobalt Assimilation''', and all of his attacks are given the "Grand Ultimate" prefix. However, this soon also became scrapped, as the move names became far too long (longer than the ones currently).
+ | *** An example of such a move was a move called '''Level 1 Hinokami: Dance of the Lotus - Halo Grace''', involving Yeling circling his enemy, constraining them with numerous hoops of fire, and launching a powerful downward punch. In Hinokami Stage Four, this move would be known as '''Level 1 Hinokami - Stage Four - Grand Ultimate Dance of the Lotus - Halo Grace'''. Damn, am I right?
+ | * Back in Squad Four, a recurring running joke was that members of the team would make fun of Yeling for not being able to speak English properly (due to his Chinese ethnicity), when in reality, Yeling is extremely fluent to the point where many assume he is naturally New Ulyssian.
+ | * Yeling does not like incels but has an exception with '''Lewis Greer''', who is one of Yeling's closest friends prior to his death. Unfortunately, this would spell disaster due to Yeling's gullible nature, and Lewis' manipulative nature, eventually planting incel thoughts into Yeling's mind. Yeling would get over it eventually.
+ | * Yeling chooses not to have an "English name" like how Yuyan's English name is "Danny", as he believed doing so would give in to the discrimination he and his race face daily in New Ulysses.
+ | * His favorite sweet is donuts - which, upon being caught enjoying his chocolate dips by Sarah Ultear, has since made him extremely cautious to eat them in secret as he does not like to share his sweets with anyone else.
+ | * His favorite dish is Canaan Styled Tomato Pork Chop Rice - a dish that is coincidentally the same dish in Hong Kong Culture.
+ | * Yeling's Canaan background is the Great Akuma World's equivalent to '''Hong Kong''', with the language Canaan being parallel to '''Cantonese'''.
+ | * Yeling is secretly an otaku, as evidenced when he knew about the '''Mana Transfer Ritual''', a reference to the Fate Series, and the anime Oath of Silence. However, he keeps this a secret, even more than Aaron.
+ | * Yeling's preferred type of women are athletic girls, such as Inoko. Athletic women are coincidentally also the preferred type of Aaron Hope (among many other disturbingly detailed qualities).
+ | * Yeling doesn't mind cleaning up after others as long as the mess isn't too abhorrent, as evidenced when Yeling frequently picks up Vicki's underwear without hesitation and throws them into the laundry.
+ | * Yeling's academics, when he was in university, was generally decent until the workload became too overwhelming for his mental health.
+ | ** In his freshmen year, Yeling had an average of 91%.
+ | ** In his sophomore year, Yeling had an average of 82%.
+ | ** By his third year, Yeling's average dropped to 48% - leading to potential academic probation.
+ | ** Yeling's greatest strength was '''Physics''' and '''English Language Arts''', while his worst subject was '''Mathematics'''.
+ | * Yeling greatly dislikes Bryce's duo name that he gave to himself and Yeling, which was known as "Black n' Yellow".
+ | * Yeling obtained his Novice Driver's License at the age of twenty-six, under the tutelage of his Outer Shadow Vicki Harriet, and passed the driver's exam with only one minor. His driving skills are said to be highly defensive in response to the Asian drivers stereotypes.

"Whether it is me. Or The Mirage. The outcome is the same for Chinese people like us. If it wasn't me, it would be someone else. This cycle of hatred will always have a Devil to make our kind be hated. That is the very nature of discrimination, Anna. And it is something that we have to live with. No matter how much we try to deceive ourselves.
No matter what you say to me... I will continue killing. I will kill as many people as I need to... to get what I want. Hate me. Resent me. If it gives you peace in these final moments, then direct all that rage you have on me as much as you want. I will be the Symbol of Darkness that you so want. The villain of your story."
- Yeling to Anna in "Unforgiveable Pawn"
Mah Ye Ling (Chinese Translation: 馬 易 玲) also known as Yeling "The Tidalflame" Mah is the thirteenth Dogma Holder for Hinokami, the God of Fire, a spectral entity that made up the flames of The Great Akuma and is the current Celestial Dragon Rain God, succeeding Shenlong the God of Rain.
Originally a terrorist serving the Contingency Initiative under Matthew "The Mirage" Lam and Elimination Squad Four, Yeling completed contracts as Tidalflame, the Chinese Terrorist. A destroyer with mass genocidal powers, Yeling's reputation was so feared that his name became an international threat, such that even those in remote areas such as Arii and Cobblestone knew all about his exploits. After CI's downfall and Transplant's rise in power, Yeling became an adventurer with close friends Shia Megumi, Inoko the Berserker, and God of Rain Shenlong. Decoupled from the Dogma, Yeling's life became liberated from The Great Akuma, however, his main prerogative remained to take down Transplant and provide a fair world. After defeating Transplant, Yeling discovered that his younger sister was alive and that she was part of the Black Legion Organization.
When Inner Shadow Loyce Hal ordered the retrieval of Yeling as part of his plan, Yeling was forced to break all ties with his friends. These two years caused Yeling to grow distant towards forming new connections with Aaron Hope and his Auxiliary Shadows, for fear that he would lose them too.
He is the older brother of Mah Ha Kah, an extremely powerful Inner Shadow to Lord Ginga, and the current Dogma Holder for Susanoo, the God of Storms. Yeling and Hakah are the only remaining survivors of the Mah Bloodline. Yeling is currently gaining strength, serving as an Auxiliary Shadow to Vicki Harriet, and reporting to Inner Shadow Loyce Hal, in hopes of rising up the ranks, defeating Loyce and Vala, and continuing with the mission of bringing a fair world to all realities through the Akuma's power.
In the Champions Universe, Yeling, like Twilight Bolt, acts as Vicki Harriet's sidekick, and is given the alias Cobalt, similar to how Vicki is known as Lens. In terms of combat proficiency, Yeling's skill is enough to raid Teleios Ascendent, though not sufficient to raid Therakiel's Temple.
When Yeling was in disguise along with Aaron Hope, Aaron forced the identity of Buddy Sanders to Yeling, with the cover story that Yeling was an apprentice to Aaron in hopes of fulfilling his dream to become a pimp at Club Caprice, much to Yeling's chagrin. Whenever Yeling is reminded of his "Buddy Sanders" alter ego, he becomes incredibly angry.
Yeling is the secondary protagonist of He Saves Gods as a Man, and is the main protagonist of The Story of Yeling Mah and Beyond the Gods - The Strongest Hinokami.

Appearance
Part I
"You will be loyal to me. Yeling Mah. For in exchange of the gift of invincibility, I shall take from you. Half of your face. No man shall see you for who you are, and no woman will ever wish to kiss upon your ruined flesh. That will be your fate."
- The Dogma of Equivalent Exchange
Yeling is a young man with a somewhat short stature (standing at 5 foot 7 inches).
One of the most defining features of Yeling's appearance, which has caused him to be extremely self-conscious, is his severe facial deformity on the right side of his face and head.
Running down the left side of his face, all the way to his left palm, are numerous angular navy blue tattoos denoting his Level 1 HInokami Dogma Bargain. In finer detail, these tattoos actually consist of runic demonic lettering representing the Dogma Bargain. After unlocking Hinokami Stage Two, the tattoos became even more complex, branching off and giving an appearance somewhat resembling that of circuitry.
During missions, Yeling dons the standard Contingency Initiative robes, which consists of a black and crimson trench coat, that covers his arms and most of his body.
When outside, Yeling wears more casual streetwear, consisting of trousers and a light-coloured hoodie.
Part II and III
After Yeling's first battle against Danny, his right hand was severed, his power was reduced, and he lost his connection to the Dogma.
Part IV
Following Yeling's second battle against Danny, Yeling's right eye was slashed out, and the ring finger on his left arm was crushed, forcing him to cut it off. At this point, Yeling's body has become matured and possesses an athletic toned physique.
When in his magical disguise after the time skip, Yeling is depicted to have long black hair reaching his shoulders and eyes similar to his mother, a chiseled face similar to his father. Yeling also donned a black leather jacket with a light coloured fur at the collar on top of a grey t-shirt, and dark grey jeans. A pair of fingerless gloves are fitted on his hands to allow him to wield his weapons. On his back is Tatsu, Aelienne's longsword, and around his right forearm is his Chainblade, which is a long chain with a blade attached at the end.
Later on, after Shin uses Time Displacement on Yeling to speed his recovery after the titanic battle, Yeling's hair grows out naturally to shoulder length, and his appearance from his magical disguise becomes his actual appearance, with the exception of his scars on his right side. Yeling now has his long hair tied back in a ponytail, his long bangs reaching his chin and covering his right side. Rui then provided Yeling with a magical eye prosthetic, Floki to replace the eye that he lost.
He Saves Gods as a Man
Yeling's appearance does not change significantly despite being two years apart. However, after his titanic battle against Lucifer and the entire realm of Hell, Yeling loses Floki and gains further burn marks around his missing right eye.
Powers and Abilities
"Not even the shackles of Hell will hold me."
- Yeling obliterating the forces of Hell
As a descendent of Mahyako, and by extension, The Great Akuma herself, Yeling is exceptionally powerful, and the limits of his strength are currently unknown. The rate at which Yeling accumulates power throughout the story is unfathomably high, as at the start of He Kills Gods as a Man, Yeling was said to fight on the level of a C Rank Auxiliary Shadow as Stage Four. However, by the time Yeling is reintroduced in He Saves Gods as a Man II, Yeling's combat proficiency skyrockets to the level of High Tier SS Rank, and later, Elite Tier SS Rank with the reveal of his new Hinokami Stage, and the return of Shenlong's Rain God powers. Essentially wielding the powers of both a Fire God and a Rain God, Yeling possesses dual elemental attributes, much like Vicki Harriet's Perfect Balance.
Yeling has fought toe to toe with extremely powerful and iconic godly beings, such as the Chinese Water God/Dragon Kanghui (Gonggong), the heavenly dragon Tianlong, numerous Demon Lords, the entire forces of Hell and the legendary fallen angel Lucifer himself - even temporarily overwhelming the devil and changing the entire climate of hell from the sheer heat of his flames. When Yeling had his narrative reset by Loyce, the last son of Mahyako was able to completely overpower an injured Aaron Hope and his Auxiliary Shadows, including High Tier S+ Ranked Sarah Ultear, Elite Tier S+ Ranked Bryce Jones, and B Ranked Robbie "X8" Fernandez.
Yeling's powers are so potent that they are capable of ripping through reality itself, and completely nullifying reality-warping effects, making him an ideal opponent to Loyce's Alogigenesis.
Due to Yeling's incredible combat proficiency, he is one of the three potential top fighters in the story's battle against Great Demon Lord Loyce Hal, alongside Elite Tier SS Ranked Aaron Hope, and Elite Tier SS Ranked Great Demon Lord Kon Larum. Of the three powerhouses, Yeling possesses the second-highest firepower, but is the most versatile, as Kon Larum's Alstroemeria is dependent on his emotional state which can vary.
In the prophetic scribes of The Black Legion, Yeling is hinted to be a member of The Dark Hexagram - his alias being The Nova. However, it is not confirmed if The Nova is indeed Yeling.
The Dogma of Equivalent Exchange: Yeling was initially bound to the Dogma, sacrificing to the proxy in exchange for access to The Great Akuma's power.
- Level 1 Hinokami: The first Level of Yeling's Dogma is an Akuma Grade, meaning Yeling manifests a direct aspect of the Akuma herself.
- Hinokami Stage Two: Cobalt Assimilation: By honing the powers of the Hinokami even further to the point of infusing each and every cell with flames, Yeling's entire body becomes an essence of fire - allowing him to channel his power far more streamlined than his base form. At Stage Two, Yeling's sheer destructive potential became strong enough to destroy a country and fight on par with Urca the Slicer. Following his Mah Bloodline awakening, Yeling's Stage Two is comparable to a Stage Four Akuma Grade Dogma.
- Hinokami Stage Three: Grand Cobalt Assimilation: Unlocked from offering his allegiance to becoming the Dogma's Champion, Stage Three takes the Hinokami even further - overloading not just his cells with flames but also his very soul. At Stage Three, Yeling's destructive potential became continental, strong enough to vaporize a celestial dragon with a single blast. Following his Mah Bloodline awakening, Yeling's Stage Three surpasses a fully powered Stage Four Aelienne.
- Hinokami Stage Four: Cobalt Phoenix Ascendent: Unlocked from merging his flames with Aelienne's, Yeling's firepower is equivalent to two Hinokami users in destructive potential, making his power multi-continental to planetary. Following his Mah Bloodline awakening, Yeling unlocks his version of Full Power Stage Four.
- Hinokami Full Power Stage Four: True Phoenix Ascendent: Yeling's version of the Full Power Stage Four differs from Aelienne as it returns to its original blue. The power of the flames far surpasses Aelienne's in power, making him the current undisputed strongest Hinokami user in history. Full Power Stage Four is capable of warping and melting reality itself.
- Hinokami Stage Five: Dead Man's Pact: Stage Five is the only stage that does not follow the naming terminology of "Cobalt", marking Yeling's divergence from his linear path to gaining power. Incorporating all of his powers together including his Level 2 Intangibility and Rain God powers, Stage Five is so powerful that Yeling was capable of changing the entire climate of Hell just by its aura, and overpowering Lucifer himself in a battle of flames. Dead Man's Pact was so powerful, that in this state, Yeling was able to not just call upon Aelienne's Phoenix Covenant, but summon thousands upon thousands of a gargantuan-sized version of it. This is the strongest stage Yeling has achieved thus far. Paired with Anarchy Form, Yeling's destructive ability is what places him on Elite Tier SS Rank among the likes of Aaron Hope and Kon Larum.
- Level 2 Intangibility: The second Level of Yeling's Dogma is a normal-grade Dogma Bargain.
Blessing of the Last Son - Anarchy Form
"Listen, Yeling. What makes Yeling Mah, Yeling Mah...
Will be no longer."
- The Dogma warning Yeling about the Anarchy Form
As a descendent of The Great Akuma through the Mahyako bloodline, Yeling is also capable of drawing upon the Akuma's body similar to how his sister is capable of manifesting through her Chaos and Tempest Forms. In Yeling's case, he is able to manifest the Akuma's aspect of Anarchy.
"I didn't need my friends. I wanted strength. I wanted power. I want it.
If I don't have friends.
If I don't have loved ones.
That is where I am strongest.
Destroy it all."
- Yeling losing himself to rage from the Anarchy Form
The power of the Anarchy Form was so potent that it instantly closed the gap between pre-awakened Stage Three Yeling and a Stage Two Aelienne, who was severely overpowering the former.
As the story progresses, Yeling learns to control the Anarchy Form, and is able to call upon Anarchy Form in Stage Five without significant drawbacks, but Yeling notes that his fighting style is still very reckless and wild despite retaining cognitive ability in the transformation.
Celestial Dragon God Physiology: Yeling currently possesses all of the power of the Celestial Dragon Shenlong, the God of Rain. Transplanted onto his body by Great Demon Lord Loyce Hal, Yeling has now become the next Celestial Rain Dragon, replacing Shenlong. As a Celestial Dragon, Yeling's body has become akin to a dragon's physiology.
- Immense Strength: Yeling's strength rivals Shenlong's full power in human form - as Yeling has proven to be capable of slicing entire landforms with ease using Tatsu, and picking up a grown man with one hand without any effort whatsoever. Though not to the same level as Kon Larum's, Yeling's physical strength is more comparable to a god's.
- Immense Durability and Endurance: Yeling's durability has been significantly enhanced since becoming a Celestial Dragon - as he has proven to be capable of surviving a Vala Enhanced Grond's double overhand strike, as well as withstanding continuous injuries from the forces of Hell, yet continue fighting for many hours on end.
- Divine Amplification: Channeling the amplification properties of Shenlong's Rainwater, Yeling's physical abilities are amplified exponentially, increasing both his strength and speed substantially.
- Way of the Rain God: When Shenlong was a Celestial Dragon, the entity lived for centuries. During these centuries worth, Shenlong battled many warriors and beings, each challenging the Dragon with a unique style or ability. Those centuries of battle experience have now been transplanted into Yeling's memories, allowing Yeling to tap into a style known as the Way of the Rain God - a fighting technique far superior to any known combat techniques due to being honed in from eons of consistent fighting against a wide variety of opponents.
- Rain Style Kenjutsu: Wielding Tatsu, Yeling executes the Rain Style Kenjutsu style - a fighting style that consists of ten forms, emphasizing wide and elegant sweeps similar to the flow of water. When combining this with his Hinokami, Yeling is able to access his Devil Rain Style variant, which adds Hinokami flame to his attacks. Rain Style Kenjutsu involves coating the blade with the violent storms of the Rain God for every form.
- Form 1 - Surface Slash: A horizontal slash which either slices his target or slices them from the shockwaves of the arc. The arc is also enhanced by Celestial Rainwater.
- Form 2 - Sun Wheel: A powerful vertical slash that is used when the user is above the opponent. The move was once used on Atlas, an Actiorione which boasts incredible durability, as evidenced when the monster was capable of withstanding the strikes of the Berserker Inoko.
- Form 3 - Laminar Downpour: Unleashing a series of timely executing slashes in a winding motion, Yeling corkscrews to his opponent and releases a flow of destruction. The move shreds a large area, but is prone to being countered due to the openings it introduces. Yeling does not use this Form often.
- Form 4 - Rainbow Mirage: Yeling creates an illusion of either himself, or his weapon, and appears behind his opponent, confusing them.
- Form 5 - Flashrain: Yeling executes a fast and instant slash similar to an Iai Slash. Requires significant concentration.
- Form 6 - Vortex Slash: Spinning violently, Yeling emits a tremendous vortex that either pushes enemies away or sucks them in, entering the blade of his sword. A crowd-controlling or crowd-dispersing ability. A similar ability is found in the Dual Wield tree of the Champions Universe, which is a popular move for melee fighters when battling the enemies of Therakiel's Temple.
- Form 7 - Sharp Winds: Yeling executes a powerful thrust, which blasts wind pressure and Celestial Rainwater frontally and decimates the target with precision.
- Form 8 - Four Seasons: Four Seasons is a move that consists of four perfectly timed and positioned slashes, with the intention of putting his opponent on the defensive for the first two or three slashes and binding them in a position where they are unable to dodge the third and fourth slash. This move managed to fool Demon Lord Alciel, who could not dodge the fourth slash and was nicked in the face.
- Form 9 - Clear Sunny Skies: Yeling executes a series of elegant movements, building momentum and Rainwater, as he shoots to the sky, clearing anything in the air. Form 9 typically chains to Form 10, or Form 2.
- Form 10 - Peace after the Flood: Yeling unleashes a giant Rainwater explosion, as Celestial Rainwater falls from above. Depending on how much Rainwater is stored, the bigger the explosion. When chained with Form 9, the explosion is gargantuan and the after rain was enough to melt the ice of a Borean.
- Devil Rainstyle Kenjutsu: Yeling combines his Rain Style with Hinokami. Doing so creates Devil variants of his ten forms, but also introduces new moves.
- Devil's Beneficient Severence: Yeling delivers a devastating finisher slash, the storms of Shenlong's power amplifying his momentum and overall damage, and the flames of Hinokami turning the blade white hot, increasing its cutting power substantially. It is said that the slash parts targets on the atom-splitting level, with the energy emitted from the atom fission contained through the Rainwater Storms.
- Devil's Meteor Waterfall: A highly advanced variant of Form 2 - Sun Wheel, Yeling delivers a downwards slash by first infusing his sword with Hinokami, then generating a powerful storm around the blade through Shenlong's power.
- Chinese Slash Dance: A fighting technique that involves the Chinese polearm or knives. The style does not involve any forms, the Chinese Slash Dance is more of a fluid fighting style involving the use of elegant and continuous slashes. The technique is best used against legions of enemies, as Yeling used the Chinese Slash Dance to decimate legions of enemies in Hell.
- Shuiquan - Six Harmonies Rain Boxing: An empty handed fighting style that inspires greatly on Shaolin Wushu, the style involving combining six harmonies and eight methods. The six harmonies involve: body and mind, mind and intent, intent and chi, chi and spirit, spirit and movement, and movement and emptiness. The eight methods include chi, bone, shape, follow, rise, return, retain, and conceal. The Shuiquan technique was what allowed Yeling to fight on equal terms of Matthew "The Mirage" Lam, who was known for the longest time to be one of the best hand to hand fighters in the Great Akuma Series.
- Arsenal of the Rain God: By concentrating the memories of Shenlong's centuries worth of experience in battle, Yeling is able to summon Rainwater Constructs of the common weapons that Shenlong's Rain Style incorporates.
- Twin Butterflies: Yeling summons two Butterfly Knives, which call upon the Chinese Slash Dance style.
- Nine Section Chain Whip: Yeling summons a nine sectioned whip, which also calls upon the Chinese Slash Dance style.
- Wrath of the Storm: Ninety Nine Sections Chain Assault: By calling upon eleven Nine Section Chain Whips in tandem, Yeling is able to wield a larger variant of his Chain Whip, and unleash wide area damage through Chinese Slash Dance.
- Guandao: A polearm that is designed for precise, long-range, melee attacks.
- Holy Rain Renewal: By coursing the Celestial Rainwater in his body, Yeling gains a continuous healing factor, which cannot be nullified due to being divine in nature. Holy Rain Renewal also cleanses Yeling of any poison, toxic chemicals, and any anti-narrative powers to some degree.
Personality
Before Time Skip
"Did you like downplaying my situation?
All of you?
Did you enjoy it when you told me my suicidal thoughts meant nothing?
Did you enjoy telling me my physical health didn't matter?"
Yeling's personality has been described to be very self-victimizing by a number of people who knew him prior to becoming a Hinokami Vessel.
It is revealed that Yeling possessed some semblance of diligence, as shown when Yeling had spent his freshmen year enrolled in college, however, due to his depression, the heavy course load proved too much for him, causing his mental health to further deteriorate.
When Yeling unlocked Hinokami, his powers went out of control, and unintentionally killed his entire family.
Despite being a mass murderer, Yeling possessed some degree of sympathy and remorse, after realizing that while he had killed almost all of his old classmates, there were some students who were probably in the same place as he did, which was proof that Yeling still had some degree of humanity left behind.
To Yeling, Squad Four acts as his surrogate family, seemingly replacing the original one he lost. However, it is noted that Yeling still holds fond memories of his time spent with his mother, father, and little sister.
Out of everybody in Squad Four, Yeling is ironically the most reluctant to take lives, with the exception of Marcela Greene.
Due to his inability to socialize, Yeling has multiple times been called out for being socially awkward, and is unable to speak to girls. Additionally, because of this inexperience, Yeling has admitted that he is attracted to practically every girl who is nice to him.
After Time Skip
"If I had gone back in time and knew that things would turn around... Would my reasons to bring back The Great Akuma still exist?"
After the four year time skip, Yeling's personality becomes noticeably more mature.
Yeling is uncomfortable with children, rarely ever interacting with them, and frequently refers to them as "brats".
Following his adventures with Shia, Inoko, and Shenlong, Yeling developed feelings for Inoko.
Even during the events of Part IV, Yeling's overwhelming feelings of loneliness takes a noticeable toll on his mental health, to the point where his jealousy and envy cause him to lash out whenever people speak about their soulmates and partners. As shown when Yeling and Aelienne spoke in the Hinokami Plane, Yeling angrily revealed to Aelienne that he hated it whenever she talked about her husband and children, believing that they were purposely looking down on him for being alone and unloved.
One of Yeling's most redeeming qualities is his loyalty to his friends.
He Saves Gods as a Man
"And as I watched Shia turn around to look at me. The one person who stood out from the crowd of high schoolers in uniforms...
The one person who was covered in scars, with a sword strapped to his back originally owned by the person he had killed...
I knew from the bottom of my heart that she could never sense me.
Shia ran in my direction. A laugh and smile on her face, as she ran right through me.
Our expressions complete polar opposites of one another."
When Yeling was captured by Vicki Harriet and Tommy Riordan, Great Demon Lord Loyce Hal made Yeling choose how each and every person who he cared about would leave his life forever.
Yeling's personality became hostile, darker, somber, and more serious, similar to his mentor, Matthew Lam. When Yeling first met Outer Shadow Aaron Hope, the two men were not on good terms, as their personalities were direct contrasts from one another.
Despite all this, Yeling respected Aaron, recognizing his good deeds and acts of kindness, and showed gratefulness to the Outer Shadow for helping his little sister recover from her trauma. As the two spent more time together, Yeling openly admitted that Aaron was "a good person", while he himself "was not" when Aaron became depressed after having an emotional argument with his fiancee, Sarah Ultear. When Aaron lost his second Auxiliary Shadow, Robbie Fernandez, after he had sacrificed himself in a last-ditch effort to defeat a Vala Enhanced Grond, Aaron became so distraught that he went against his philosophy of hating gods to consider accepting godhood so that he could no longer feel emotional pain. Seeing Aaron was hurting, Yeling came to visit the Outer Shadow and offered to drive him to Arii, where Yeling showed Aaron how to pay his respects to his fallen comrades and move on from their deaths properly.
When speaking to Loyce at the Church of Babel, Yeling told the Demon Lord that Aaron was "the hero" of the story, and that he would take the required role of the opposite, believing that in the end, there was no opportunities left for him to play the role of "a good person".
Trivia
- The original Yeling Mah was intended to join the Stormwatch Brigade under the codename "Cobalt". This story was later revised as the plot didn't seem to go anywhere.
- In this alternate storyline, "Cobalt" would also inherit Matthew Vistara's Vision Uniform, and would instead try to make amends with the rest of Realmwatch by proving himself to be an ally to good.
- In the alternate storyline, Yeling unlocks Stage Four by sheer emotions, and actually ends up defeating Hakah and saving her, but Hakah is reverted into a child form. Working with Stormwatch, the story would center around Yeling trying to find a way to revert his sister back to normal. This plot was later abandoned as it was too similar to Demon Slayer.
- In the alternate storyline, Yeling's Stage Four is known as Grand Ultimate Cobalt Assimilation, and all of his attacks are given the "Grand Ultimate" prefix. However, this soon also became scrapped, as the move names became far too long (longer than the ones currently).
- An example of such a move was a move called Level 1 Hinokami: Dance of the Lotus - Halo Grace, involving Yeling circling his enemy, constraining them with numerous hoops of fire, and launching a powerful downward punch. In Hinokami Stage Four, this move would be known as Level 1 Hinokami - Stage Four - Grand Ultimate Dance of the Lotus - Halo Grace. Damn, am I right?
- Back in Squad Four, a recurring running joke was that members of the team would make fun of Yeling for not being able to speak English properly (due to his Chinese ethnicity), when in reality, Yeling is extremely fluent to the point where many assume he is naturally New Ulyssian.
- Yeling does not like incels but has an exception with Lewis Greer, who is one of Yeling's closest friends prior to his death. Unfortunately, this would spell disaster due to Yeling's gullible nature, and Lewis' manipulative nature, eventually planting incel thoughts into Yeling's mind. Yeling would get over it eventually.
- Yeling chooses not to have an "English name" like how Yuyan's English name is "Danny", as he believed doing so would give in to the discrimination he and his race face daily in New Ulysses.
- His favorite sweet is donuts - which, upon being caught enjoying his chocolate dips by Sarah Ultear, has since made him extremely cautious to eat them in secret as he does not like to share his sweets with anyone else.
- His favorite dish is Canaan Styled Tomato Pork Chop Rice - a dish that is coincidentally the same dish in Hong Kong Culture.
- Yeling's Canaan background is the Great Akuma World's equivalent to Hong Kong, with the language Canaan being parallel to Cantonese.
- Yeling is secretly an otaku, as evidenced when he knew about the Mana Transfer Ritual, a reference to the Fate Series, and the anime Oath of Silence. However, he keeps this a secret, even more than Aaron.
- Yeling's preferred type of women are athletic girls, such as Inoko. Athletic women are coincidentally also the preferred type of Aaron Hope (among many other disturbingly detailed qualities).
- Yeling doesn't mind cleaning up after others as long as the mess isn't too abhorrent, as evidenced when Yeling frequently picks up Vicki's underwear without hesitation and throws them into the laundry.
- Yeling's academics, when he was in university, was generally decent until the workload became too overwhelming for his mental health.
- In his freshmen year, Yeling had an average of 91%.
- In his sophomore year, Yeling had an average of 82%.
- By his third year, Yeling's average dropped to 48% - leading to potential academic probation.
- Yeling's greatest strength was Physics and English Language Arts, while his worst subject was Mathematics.
- Yeling greatly dislikes Bryce's duo name that he gave to himself and Yeling, which was known as "Black n' Yellow".
- Yeling obtained his Novice Driver's License at the age of twenty-six, under the tutelage of his Outer Shadow Vicki Harriet, and passed the driver's exam with only one minor. His driving skills are said to be highly defensive in response to the Asian drivers stereotypes.
