''Marvella Va'len is the last surviving member of the Nightsisters (or Va'len Clan/Madison Coven), responsible for their deaths before taking to the scene as an international villain with the goal of accumulating as much knowledge as possible as the old adage ''''Knowledge is Power'''' had become her creed. It was shortly after this alliance had ended that the eccentric spellcaster mysteriously vanished. When the world thought Marvella had finally been ousted by her abuse of magic or killed by Talisman she inexplicably returned and surrendered herself to the authorities. With this discovery in mind, it was deemed that the actions of the last Va'len were a result of mental instability. It was summarily decided that she would be institutionalized for rehabilitation. Now discharged, Marvella Va'len fights beside her former adversaries as part of her long road to redemption, donning the moniker '''The Nightsister''' in honor of her fallen sisters, while doing all she can to stop from relapsing.''

===Purpose===

The Nightsisters were one of the few covens that studied dark magic to better the world. Its founders realized that sometimes the only way to defeat daemons and monsters is to understand their power and use it against them. While they maintained a passive stance within magical affairs, they did act as advisors and provided information to those fellow witches, warlocks, and hunters that dealt with demonic activity directly. However, the Nightsisters' studies of dark magic made many highly wary of them as they were more likely to become corrupted and despite constant attempts by the Elders to allay any fears, it is a wariness that has lingered.
Marvella Va'len was born a member of the Nightsisters (or the Va'len Clan) in Madison County, Tennessee. The Nightsisters study and practice the darker schools of magic to aid Heroes across the world when combating demons and other eldritch beings that originate from hellish planes of existence. Generally, most see their contributions as vital to the protection of the world from magic and those who would use it to conquer, however, there are those who would gladly see the Va'len Clan be exiled or even burned at the stake, seeing them just as much a threat to global security. Time and time again the Elders of the Nightsisters have reassured the skeptics that every precaution is taken but it has been noted that these precautions have failed in the past, forcing the Elders to banish those who fall to the temptation of abusing the dark magicks they have learned. These banished witches then go on to either disappear - undoubtedly a victim of their own magic - or go on to become a national liability within the United States but are quickly curtailed by agents of the Council.

===Banishment===

They were one of the several covens that were present for the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. At first, they were able to maintain their secret while innocent women, and men, were wrongly accused of witchcraft and put to the stake. However, as the situation escalated the Supreme of the coven at the time, Anna-Leigh Delaque-Va'len, began to fear for the Nightsisters' safety and ability to remain hidden. So it was decided that the Clan would leave Salem and find a new home within North America. For a time the coven kept on the move, never staying in one place for too long to avoid their secret being discovered. They remained nomadic for the better part of a century before finally settling in Madison County in 1788.
Marvella was among several considered to be part of a new generation of prodigies within the Clan. Her affinity for wielding magic was quickly noticed and nurtured by her teachers. Unfortunately, this nurturing led to her craving for more knowledge. Frustrated and dismayed by her mentors' repeatedly denying her requests to study the more dangerous texts, Mavella began to secretly study them without permission. She was able to accomplish this until the trials: a series of tests that young Nightsisters perform on their eighteenth birthday to determine whether they are ready to begin studying the more advanced magic. The final test is a spar between the fledgling Nightsister and one of their teachers chosen arbitrarily. Should the Nightsister prevail, they will pass their trials and be deemed ready to learn the darker forms of magic. There were only three, out of twenty, Nightsisters that remained: Agate, Marvella, and Cora. Agate went first followed by Cora. The former failed while the latter passed. Now only Marvella was left to spar one of her teachers. It was strenuous and quickly consumed much of Marvella's energy with every push she made. Feeling she was on the verge of failing, Marvella, in fear, opened a portal to a qliphotic realm which swallowed her teacher. In her place, there was only smoke and a hellish pentagram burned into the ground. Realising what she had done, Marvella attempted to run but was quickly apprehended by the other teachers present where she was brought before the Elders. The young witch pleaded with them to grant her a second chance but they had already made their decision. She had been banished like those before her. She was given time to say her farewells to her family and friends but by the end of the week, Marvella Va'len was alone in the dark in the middle of nowhere.

===Villainous Beginnings===

Embittered by her banishment, Marvella began to travel across the country in search of new ways to learn the Occult. However, she was barred and chased off at every opportunity - blacklisted thanks to her Clan. Infuriated, she decided that there was no other way to carry on studying without taking by force. So, it began with a few thefts from a library, then a bookshop and it escalated further and further. Soon she was stealing tomes and manuscripts from some of the most highly reputed sorcerers and witches in the United States. Knowing that these thefts would not go unnoticed, Marvella constantly kept on the move, making sure to cover her tracks as she did. Despite her efforts, she was occasionally caught by servants and henchmen of those she stole from but was quick to escape before finding herself in any real danger.

===The First of Many===

Marvella's studies allowed her to begin using magic she knew would have never been permitted by the Elders. Still feeling betrayed by them - as well as her Clan as a whole - she knew exactly what to do with her new abilities. Returning to Madison County, Marvella surprised the Clan by tearing down the protective spells that had hid them. Unprepared and unaware of what was happening, the Nightsisters stirred into a mass panic and it was in this moment that Marvella saw nothing but weakness. Rather pity or mock them it caused a deep-seated rage come to the surface within her. Just as her former sisters came to realize who was responsible, she unleashed an eldritch wail that petrified them all. In an instant, the entire Va'len Clan had been destroyed save one. Through this act, Marvella committed herself to nothing but the acquisition of power no matter the cost or consequence.

===Heroes, Heroes Everywhere===

Calling herself 'Faithless One', Marvella quickly made her mark in North America. No longer exercising caution and stealth to steal what she wanted, she opted for the more direct approach, quite happy to give her victims grueling ultimatums between life and death. Her activities did not go unchecked for long and soon enough she found herself warring against numerous heroes as well as agents sent by the Council as she carried on accumulating more knowledge and power. Sometime later, Marvella started to set her eyes on the rest of the world with her Modus Operandi being reported in France, Germany, Russia, Argentina and Turkey.
