Lev Balakov, now known as Surge, is a former villain infamous for stealing mystical artifacts.
The former high-profile art thief and ex-con currently works for UNTIL as a condition of his early release, using his insight into the supernatural and criminal underworld to help the good guys.
The alias Surge comes from his inherited ability to act as a magical conduit and power source. Through his connection with another plane Lev can grant a surge of boundless energy or life force to whatever he comes in contact with, energizing anything from artifacts to metahumans.
Surge is trying to reform himself, but being the good guy is not as easy as it is made out to be.
Personality
Lev Balakov is an animated, energetic and impulsive individual. He is both easygoing and easily distracted. Despite his villainous upbringing, the not-so-upstanding young man has managed to maintain a surprisingly optimistic outlook on life. And Lev seems determined to not waste a single moment of his newfound freedom.
Lev is still very much a work in progress, he definitely has no shortage of bad habits. Concepts such as personal possession are a little foreign to him. After all, his main role model growing up was a supervillain.
At times Lev does seem conflicted, but considering his rather sudden and drastic transition from villain to hero it only makes sense for his moral compass to sometimes be spinning. And while the humor and happy-go-lucky attitude are no doubt in part a facade or coping mechanism, there does appear to be a half decent guy beneath all of it who genuinely wants to make up for his involvement in the family's many terrible crimes.
Abilities
Surge's power allows him to channel boundless (magical) energy or life force, granting him various abilities.
His mystical talents often manifest in the form of vermilion tinted sparks and bright light with a warm glow.
- Enhanced Stamina - Because Surge's vitality can keep on replenishing itself, he possesses an almost unlimited amount of energy. His mind does need to rest, but his body can simply keep on rivatalizing itself.
- Energy Detection - Surge is able to sense life force and pick up on nearby magical energies.
- Energy Transferal - Surge can transfer the energy he channels through physical contact, infusing others with life force or energy. For most metahumans this means their meta abilities also gain a boost. They will find themselves suddenly able to use their power at its maximum potential, at least temporarily (or as long as physical contact with Surge is maintained), without exhausting themselves in the process.
The same goes for mystical artifacts, Surge is essentially a walking power source for anything magical.
- Regeneration - Whichever otherworldly plane Surge is somehow tethered to seems to supply him with near endless vitality and causes any injuries he sustains to heal by themselves almost instantly. This allows him to survive wounds that would be lethal for any normal person and recover from virtually anything. Exactly how fast he regenerates depends on the amount of damage that has been inflicted.
Because Surge is able to transfer the life force he generates through physical contact, he can also use his power to help others heal faster through touch. This gift (or curse) works on anything with life force.
- Witchcraft - Surge is a magical conduit with not only an affinity for the black arts, but a measureable connection with another plane. When it comes to practicing magic, Surge chooses to rely heavily on the use of artifacts, spell scrolls and rituals to channel his talents. With the exception of a few minor cantrips.
Weaknesses
- Family - Surge has very conflicted feelings about his family, which can lead to dangerous hesitation.
- Inexperience - Surge is relatively new to the hero scene. And to being one of the good guys in general.
- Limitations - Surge can only transfer life force, he does not have the power of creation. It is not within his power to reverse aging, cure genetic disorders or induce life. He can bring someone back from the dead, but only if part of them is still alive and said person has not reached the end of their lifespan yet.
- Moderation - When you supply someone with boundless energy it is easy for things to get out of control.
- Not Invulnerable - Disintegration, complete molecular destabilization, total incineration or any method that ensures the destruction of Surge's whole body (or that damages him faster than he can heal) is not something he can come back from. There needs to be something left of him to be able to regenerate.
- Not Unstoppable - While there is not a lot that he would not survive, Surge will not be of much use in a fight when he is encased in ice, buried under rubble, drowning on an infinite loop or affected by a curse.
- Pain - Surge may have build up a tolerance for pain, but he is not immune to it and still feels everything.
- Preparation - He may be a magical conduit and power source, but Surge relies entirely on artifacts, scrolls and rituals to perform any kind of magic by himself. With the exception of a few minor cantrips.
- Temporary - The effects of Surge's power are fleeting and only last if physical contact is maintained.
- Sleep - His muscles may never tire, but Surge still needs to sleep to stay sharp and recharge himself.
Hooks
- Eastern Europe - Lev spend the majority of his childhood abroad, most of it around Eastern Europe.
- Russian Mafia - Surge's family has strong ties to the Russian mafia, he still has a few connections there.
- Supernatural Beacon - Like moths drawn to a flame, Surge attracts things that detect magical energy.
- UNTIL - As a condition of his early release, Surge is now working for UNTIL as one of their special agents.
