To sit silent in the still of night, Be fearful of a whisper. To be still as the creeping rock, Making the silence crisper.

Alanthe ran. Where she ran she didn’t know but at least it was away from that place… away from him. For hours her feet carry her deeper into the night, until all that remained was the solitude and the sound of her own breathing. Then something makes her pause and look at the rocks at her feet. They were covered in odd scratch marks and she kneels to examine them.

To cease the sound of beating heart, And stifle shifting breath. To be as timeless as the hills, Let no soul be bereft.

In the gloom her fingers trace over those scratches, runes she realises. Not scratches at all, but carvings. Alanthe’s breath catches as she tries to read them, on hands and knees over these strange rocks that seem to have captured her, here in this place.

Pause between the tick and tock, The meaning left between. To see the darkness of the heart, Simply as the unseen.

The shadows in those runes grow, and her eyes widen as it spreads upwards. Covering her hands and she moves to pull away fearful as all her kind are of the dark. Then something in her stills, going quiet. She smiles her fear gone, feeling more at home than she has ever been.

Sink down into the earth below, As if to padded throne. Feel the power of greatest truth, Right to the very bone.

Alanthe follows that darkness down into the rock, drawn in by those dark runes. Feeling the weight of their truth around her, becoming her and she welcomes it like an old friend. This feels right somehow, to end her journey this way. It was certainly a more peaceful end.

For all great deeds and finest arts, Come from men alone. Reach up and capture heaven then, It is the peace you now have known.

In the darkness points of light appear, flickering above her. With a dreamy smile she reaches up and captures one. The light distorts around her. Then all is quiet, no sign of her remains.
