Except for art class, school bored her, and she was constantly getting in trouble when small things (like, say, the sprinkler shutoff valve during a fire alarm) went missing. She soon ran away from home and lived on her wits, eventually being taken in by a young engineer, Stephen Grice. From him, she learned to love electronics, designing and building numerous gadgets just for the simple thrill of seeing what they'd do.
