Overview

Lady Hellstrider is a demon hunter who primarily operates in Millennium City's Westside district, but occasionally takes jobs to go after supernatural threats in Canada, the Southwest Desert and especially Vibora Bay, where supernatural goings-on are a daily occurrence. While anything that goes bump in the night is fair game for her, she has a special hatred and very little mercy for vampires and demons that prey on the innocent. Though she won't kill a monster simply for being a monster and has nothing but sympathy for those monsters that didn't choose to become such, she despises any monster that chooses to prey upon humans instead of making some effort to coexist with humanity in general.

Background and Origins

A Pact of Darkness

Two hundred years ago, there was a man by the name of Matthias Hellstrom who wanted two things in life: power for himself, and a legacy that would last long after his death.

Matthias sought power by many means -- political, financial, social, legal and criminal. But at every turn he fell short, either because of his own failings or because of the actions of others. Embittered by the latter and no less determined, Matthias sought darker avenues of power, beginning to delve into the occult and the infernal and seeking secrets not meant for mortal eyes, until the fateful night when he was contacted by a greater lord of the Netherworld, a powerful and malevolent entity by the name of Malgorath, who offered Matthias the power and legacy that he so desired. But when dealing with the scions of Darkness, nothing comes without a price.

The pact forged by Matthias Hellstrom and Malgorath granted a portion of the demon lord's hellish power to Matthias and the firstborn of every generation of his bloodline, to use as they saw fit. But the price for this service and this power was a dear one indeed -- by using this power, even for a benevolent reason or purpose, each firstborn of Matthias Hellstrom's bloodline would be damned to an eternity of servitude in Malgorath's domain in Hell upon their departure from this world and mortal coil.

The Twin Firstborns

The latest firstborn descendents of the bloodline of Matthias are Caine and Tania Hellstrom, a pair of fraternal twins who were born to Alastor Hellstrom, the CEO of Hellstrom and Matheson Enterprises, a multi-million dollar law firm and a front for an evil demon cult dedicated to Malgorath. Alastor showed a marked favoritism for Caine, the son of the two inheritors, over Tania, the daughter, to the point where Alastor often wished that Tania had never been born, seeing her as little more than another mouth to feed. Alastor, like many in the Hellstrom clan, served Malgorath in life, and spent much of his life chasing the arcane, and when the chance discovery of an evil ritual that would increase one twin's power at the expense of the life and soul of the other was made, Alastor saw an opportunity to rid himself of his unwanted daughter once and for all.

Unfortunately for Alastor, Aurelia Hellstrom, his wife and Tania and Caine's mother, caught wind of her husband's plan. Unlike Alastor, Aurelia loved both of her children, and would not allow Alastor to murder their daughter for the sake of their son. So she made arrangements to have Tania placed with another family, John and Marie Cosgrove, friends of hers from back before she met Alastor. This would allow Tania to have something resembling a normal childhood and life, and allow Alastor to raise Caine as he wished.

Awakening and Tragedy

Tania lived with the Cosgroves for the next fourteen years of her life. Those years were good years, and John and Marie took to Tania right away. John was an engineer who worked a lot with machines, while Marie worked a job at the local bakery. Tania quickly developed an interest in taking things apart and putting them back together, as well as showing a natural athletic talent that would soon earn her a place in the local sports teams. But not long after she turned sixteen, Tania's easy and carefree days would come to an end.
