Bio
Brooke Stevens is a bookish, sheltered young woman from rural Iowa originally, where her only friend was her golden retriever named Byron. Her father, Roger, is a kind but fairly dull man. He sells insurance for a living, and watches PBS for excitement. Her stepmother, Marylou, is the only mother she can remember; her real mother left when Brooke was 2 years old.
Marylou is an elementary school teacher, and she and Roger instilled a love of learning in Brooke at an early age. Reading was Brooke's main passion: sci-fi, poetry, and literature, especially the Romance poets, but her absolute favorite has always been the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. With her intellectual tendencies, Brooke didn't fit in at all in a small Bible Belt town, and she was delighted to get a scholarship to the University of Chicago. Once there, she made many friends, began practicing Wicca, and in her sophomore year, began dating a young associate professor of history, Dr. Robert Carlisle.
Dr. Carlisle often worked as a consultant with an antiquities dealer named Gabriel Frost. When Frost acquired what appeared to be a medieval grimoire, he contacted Dr. Carlisle with a small photocopied sample, and asked for help with translating it. Carlisle was very excited about the book, and wished to study it at length. Unbeknownst to Carlisle, Frost had also contacted several prospective buyers.
Frost hosted a meeting of the interested parties at his gallery. It was tense from the onset; Carlisle was upset to find that Frost was more interested in the book's monetary rather than academic value. Frost's girlfriend Devon took an immediate dislike to one of the buyers and threw him out. Frost and Carlisle were soon arguing about the translation, and the collectors started arguing about the value of the book.
In the midst of the discord, one of the buyers (Maya Devereux, an evil cultist), tried to simply take the book. She began firing magical rays, killing two of the other buyers. She attacked Frost, but he grabbed the Book and used it to block the ray. This opened a portal to the Shadow Plane, through which he and the others were able to escape.
They remained on the Shadow Plane for several days, until Frost gleaned enough from studying the Book to return them to Earth, where only minutes had passed. Using his new-found knowledge, Gabriel was able to summon a shadow creature and defeat Devereux, though the gallery burned down during the battle. Repeated exposure to magical energies has affected all the survivors, albeit in different ways.
Brooke was affected more than all the others save perhaps Jo Marx.
