Once a normal kid growing up in the crime-filled streets of Purgatory, Textile City a young Michael Suffolk is blinded after being in a terrible car accident. While the accident took his sight it activated a latent 'metagene' in Michael's DNA that caused his normal human senses to be enhanced to superhuman levels and allowed him to hear, smell, and taste better than the average baseline human. As the years progressed Michael developed a special "sonar pulse" that compensated for his lack of vision and used it to "see" in new ways. Michael eventually became motivated to use his powers for the greater good by becoming "The Shadow" and stopping crimes all across Textile City ranging from drug dealing to human trafficking. He finally adopted the namesake of "Gargoyle" and vowed to protect his city from the lies and corruption spread by the many crime families and gangs located within Purgatory.
Background
Michael Suffolk lived with his father, a shipyard worker in Textile City in the crime-filled neighborhood known as, Purgatory. Purgatory got its name simply due to the amounts of crime made the neighborhood a living hell and people casually suffered as it also wasn't uncommon for innocent people to go missing or even turn up dead for no good amount of reason. Michael was told by his father time-after-time again to do well in school and to not end up like him as a pathetic shipyard worker as the job didn't pay well and it barely put enough food on the table or clothes on their backs. As a casual pastime Michael liked to sit on the fire escape of his apartment and glare at the stars and occasionally overlooked the streets as police cars would zoom down the street with sirens blaring, chasing after the usual fleeing criminals that existed in the neighborhood known as, Purgatory.
Michael, at around six or nine years old, one day after school decided to go out to eat with his dad, Isaiah Suffolk on Father's Day. Michael's favorite place to eat was the Yummy Burger restaurant where he could get a special order of chili fries and a double pounder cheeseburger. After the two had their "fancy meal" they drove back home to where they could spend all afternoon watching movies till they fell asleep, but fate had other plans. An unexpected moving van steered out of control in the middle of an intersection and caused a massive car crash and fender bender with incoming traffic, Isiah's car got upturned and flipped on its back causing it to nearly knock all the wind out of Isiah and put his young son Michael in a coma.
Michael was in a coma for six weeks with his dad constantly coming to visit him and then the moment finally came where Michael opened his eyes and clenched his dad's hand that was lying right next to his own hand, but something was wrong. When Michael finally came to he found that he couldn't see, Michael had become blind! Turns out in the car crash he was in cause the part of his brain that allowed him to see was severely damaged and Michael was now forever permanently blinded. Now whereas most people felt sympathy towards Michael for losing his sight, the crash awoke Michael's 'metagene' and gained an enhancement in all his human senses as well as balance. Michael could now hear, smell, and taste better than a normal human.
Elsewhere Isiah sought out a notorious crime family who ran operations in and out of Purgatory, this was the Kenji Crime Family. Isaiah overheard they practiced in ancient mystical practices that could heal the human body in many ways, even bring the dead back to life and Isiah wanted to talk to the head of the Kenji Crime Family and hope that he could use his 'connections' to the dark arts to heal and repair Michael's blindness. This apparently didn't sit well with Tao Kenji, the head of the Kenji Crime Family and had Isiah killed for s, this later resulted in Michael have to put in multiple different foster homes until he finally escaped and lived on the streets and learned how to hone his enhanced senses to the point of where he had the ears of a owl and could he the smallest conversation from miles away. This eventually led to Michael becoming a casual church-goer, he never really entered the church but instead used his enhanced sense of hearing to listen to the preaches from across the street on a rooftop. Michael would make this a casual thing until he became a devout Christian and favored sitting outside the church looking up to gargoyles that surrounded the church walls, forming a connection with it. Little would Michael know that the gargoyle's symbolism would later play an important role in the man he would later become during the next coming years.
Origins
When Mike was in his early twenties he attended Americus University, Textile City's most prestigious university. By this point Mike was living with Father Bishop, the preacher at the church Mike frequently visited when he was still a child. Father Bishop adopted Mike at age 10 and taught him right from wrong and to always be a better than average when it comes to the obstacles life throws at you in the long run. While attending Americus University Mike majored in psychology and had a brief romantic fling with a Chinese girl he met in German class before she mysteriously stopped coming to school and then this led to Mike meeting his best friend, Brian Meech. Brian and Mike graduated top of their class after attending Americus University and looked throughout Textile City to find a new place of employment and found themselves interning at a psychology office.
Mike and Brian stopped interning at the psychology office after 3 months and returned back to Purgatory. They bought out a small office space of their own where Mike and Brian operated out of two separate offices in the building and operated as licensed psychiatrists. Eventually they would meet their future secretary/friend Tracy Grant, a distraught young woman who witnessed a crime she couldn't unsee and was living in a state of paranoia and fear that if theses people ever found out about her she could possibly lose her life and never be heard from again. It would later be found out that this group was controlled by the man known only as Father Don and he was the most feared man in all of Purgatory he even gained the nickname, 'The Devil of Purgatory'. The trauma Tracy was going through awoke an anger and hatred Mike had never felt before, it angered him to the point of that it felt like he HAD to do something as the police were of no help due to that there was not enough evidence to really kick off an investigation of any kind.
Mike decided to put his 'gifts' to use one night and go out and truly test how 'superhuman' he really was. Throwing on a makeshift costume put together from household items, Mike spent the whole night out beating up thugs left and right and leaving them for the police. This later awoke a great fear into the people across Purgatory as they all thought another crime family was making their debut in Purgatory and was now targeting innocent people just for the sake of gaining a reputation, when really it was mild-mannered Michael Suffolk taking to the streets of Purgatory as the vigilante Purgatory needed. Mike had only one goal in mind and that was to right the wrongs these many crime families had made since their first appearances.
Becoming a Vigilante
Motivated by the psychological torment Tracy Grant had to ensue, Michael had been motivated by her trauma to become a vigilante operating within the neighborhood of Purgatory. This didn't take long for the many crime families in Textile City to take notice of as by the end the first month after Michael became the vigilante, he had already took out half the Father Don's drug operations all throughout Purgatory. Mike was dubbed "The Shadow" by the criminals he put behind bars as his appearance consisting of an all-black costume made him perfectly blend in with darkened areas of most surroundings, this of course didn't sit well with Father Don and this led to him buckling down on patrols and security at most of his drug labs and warehouses throughout the neighborhood out of fear that "The Shadow" would shut down another safehouse and ruin him yet again.
Weeks following the shut down of most of Father Don's drug labs, The Shadow started chasing after another gang known as the Black Mambas. The Black Mambas are a large, well armed gang from Jamaica, the Dominion Republic, and a few other Caribbean nations, they are known to be "children of voodoo" with strong psychic and precognitive powers. They make their money not just by using their dark magic to intimidate others and any other competition they may have but they also have an underground human trafficking rink. The Black Mambas are known to kidnap mostly young children, presumably around the ages of 14 and young to 18 and up, most of their victims are young girls from broken homes but they have been known to kidnap young boys as well. Once The Shadow learned of the Black Mambas and their angle in the city, he quickly took to investigate and eventually stop them.
After three months of taking out many of the Black Mambas hideouts and safehouse The Shadow finally received a tip on their leader, a woman by the name of Marinette Baba-Kifo. Baba-Kifo is the manufacturer of a special drug of her own design and enhancement through her magical power called, HeebieJeebie. What the drug does is projects a person's worst fear or nightmare from the back of their mind and morphs that fear into a physical illusion that they can cower before. Baba-Kifo planned on masking all of Purgatory and Textile City with HeebieJeebie and leaving only the Black Mambas as the rulers of their own personal, city-wide playground. The Shadow confronted Marinette Baba-Kifo and put a stop to her through a long, hand-to-hand fistfight that eventually ended with The Shadow having to expose Baba-Kifo to her own fear drug so he could finally subdue her. Once she was caught Marinette's own worst fear was finally realized and brought into the light. The Shadow, who was just a man in a mask to her had morphed into a hellish being like no other, a demon, and once Baba-Kifo was forced to witness the demon before her very eyes, she was instantly traumatized with the only thing the police could get from her was: "Demon...the Demon owns Purgatory". This demon was of course no other than The Shadow, who by the very next morning was re-dubbed as, "The Demon of Purgatory".

Personality
Following the death of his father by the hands of the criminals that roamed the neighborhood of Purgatory, Michael Suffolk became obsessed with getting into the minds of criminals just to get to know why they do what it is they do. This led to Michael becoming a psychologist later in life and even a criminal psychologist too, of course after hearing so many stories regarding how these low-life scums became convinced that they were untouchable and the police could do nothing to stop them it became Mike's main motivation for becoming the Gargoyle. However like the grotesque creature he themed himself after, Mike is never afraid to give in to his "demon" side of his Gargoyle persona and is never shy to beat his enemies to a bloody pulp if he desperately needs too. This however only happens whenever Michael comes under moments of extreme and intense stress.
Lastly, Michael suffers from anxiety and it is never uncommon for him to find it difficult trying to juggle his vigilante life as the "Demon of Purgatory" and his career as a criminal psychologist with the work from both lives being intensely overwhelming and stressful, usually worsening his anxiety.

Gebagabooban
The creature known as, Gebagabooban is the mystical entity the Exhumed look up to and worship greatly. It is unknown what unearthly dimension spawned or even birthed Gebagabooban but all that is known is that at some point in history Gebagabooban and the Exhumed become allies of sorts and Gebagabooban exchanges his dark magical power to the Exhumed and allows them to become immortals as long as the great Gebagabooban stays alive and his magic continues to exist on the earthly plan of existence.
The Gebagabooban has been described as a lanky figure with a body as thin as a snake and even moves in a similar fashion as a snake, it also walks on all four legs (two front legs, two hind legs). Gebagabooban also is immortal and has the ability to feed off the fear of others and use it to make both himself and his magic stronger, which is likely the reason why he chose to use the Exhumed ninja clan to be the ones to harness his power since they were inducing fear into individuals long before he ever first appeared on Earth. Gebagabooban also has powerful eye beams that are known to erase people from off the face of the earth, his eye beams are described as being "composed of flame" and is powered by how much sin, guilt, or fear a person has hidden within them. Gargoyle, whilst he has never seen the Great Gebagabooban himself considers an enemy of such high power as an Alpha-Level Threat and it would take every hero from each side of the world to take him down.
It was eventually found out by both White Lotus and Gargoyle that the only thing known to injure or even kill Gebagabooban is a mystical weapon known as the, Vorpal Blade. The Vorpal Blade is a weapon forged from the mythical and legendary metal known as, Adamantine, the same substance that was used to forge the sickle the Greek mythological hero, Perseus used to decapitate the Gorgon Medusa while she slept. The Vorpal Blade is the only known weapon to harm and pierce the impenetrable skin of Gebagabooban, the Blade also can tune into the Earth's primordial forces and cause the "blade" to vibrate and pass through solid objects, and with a steady hand and a strong heart the wielder of the Vorpal Blade can use the weapon to kill Gebagabooban and erase every trace of his black magic from existence, it is also theorized that since the Exhumed receive their own supernatural power from Gebagabooban himself, once he is killed then Exhumed will cease to exist as well since their immortality is fueled by Gebagabooban's own lifeforce.
Powers
- Sonar Pulse: Similar if not exactly like electroreception found in sharks and most other fish species, Gargoyle lost his eyesight at a young age but this awakened his latent 'metagene'. Gargoyle can perceive temporary "sight" via neuro-electrical stimuli emitted from the human brain and create an outline of a person's body through the stimuli. By using this Gargoyle can easily navigate through Textile City with ease, essentially creating a "psychic map" of the environment around him and perceive the outline of even buildings, streets, and cars through this sonar pulse he can send out. The Pulse even works underwater too.
- Sonar Sight: A power born straight from his Sonar Pulse, Gargoyle can extract residual neuro-electric energy from a person's dead corpse and create a faint outline of the deceased's or the killer's recent path allowing for a easier chance to narrow down a last known location. This power is extremely limited for how long the person has been dead for seeing how the neuro-electric energy can die out after 48 hours since the person death.
- Enhanced Human Olfactory System: Michael's sense of smell was greatly enhanced beyond the peak of an average adult male's. Michael's new sense of smell allows him to be almost like a bloodhound and be able to smell things like the tiniest trace amounts of blood in the air due to the amounts of iron found in humans blood.
- Parabolic Olfactory Focusing: He can block out and isolate all other scents and smells from his nasal cavities and focus them only on one distinct smell he wishes to sense. This comes in handy greatly for whenever Michael is tracking someone who may be wearing a strong and heavy cologne, deodorant, or perfume. He also has an ability where he will forever remember the scent even after finally tracking it down so he will no longer need to block out other scents that he me acquire at once just so he can focus on the specific one.
- Enhanced Human Somatosensory System: Suffolk's sense of touch is so greatly enhanced beyond the normal human level that he can feel the smallest change in room temperature and pressure changes within the air. His sense of touch is also not limited to just reading Braille like most blind citizens, but he can also read text in most books and novels due to his skin being so sensitive that the ink impressions in most books feel slightly raised up away from the page, allowing Mike to make out what letter it is he is reading. However the only downside to this is that Mike has a hard time reading laminated pages of binders and portfolios as the the surface is far too smooth to make out what it says.
- Superhuman Auditory System: Suffolk's hearing is as precise as an owl's being that his inner ear can pick up soundwaves far better than a normal human's. Suffolk has trained and honed his hearing so that he gained a new power that allows him to drown out all incoming sounds so that he can focus on the specific sound he actually wants to hear. Mike's hearing also allows him to hear through most soundproof walls, glass, and barriers with ease and can usually perfectly repeat back what he may have heard in almost an instant. Lastly Mike can hear a heartbeat from over twenty feet away and can hear the smallest whisper or mumble from only fifty feet away.
- Parabolic Hearing: Gargoyle's lack of sight blessed him with the gift of "selective hearing". With this Gargoyle can easily eavesdrop on other's conversations from miles away and can even utilize this power to make himself a human lie detector and sense changes in a person's heart beat or even vocal cords seeing how a person's voice tends to tighten up whenever they tell a lie to someone.
- Proximity Alert: Essentially the equivalent to extrasensory perception (ESP), Gargoyle's Proximity Alert combines his sense of smell and hearing together allowing them to form a sixth sense that warns him of an enemy's presence drawing closer to him.
- Enhanced Vestibular Sense: Gargoyle has a super vestibular sense which allows for a extremely well developed sense of balance, the positioning of limbs and the center of balance as well as the physical condition to use these facts. This combination makes him almost impossible to be knocked down/imbalanced, falling down and able to recover from momentary imbalances near instantly. He is able to perfectly balance on any object, no matter how narrow or unstable it may be.
Equipment
Gargoyle Suit
Michael, when he first started down his path to being a vigilante took to wearing a costume that was homemade with bits and pieces being bought off the internet. Eventually Michael had to take to wearing something a bit more thicker and denser seeing how the gangs he was fighting were stepping up their artillery to something more intimidating and lethal. Michael took to wearing Kevlar-lined battle gear and it worked out swell, being able to block bullets and deflect most small knives from puncturing any part of his body.
Michael eventually took his final steps to becoming Gargoyle and met Melvin Murray, a designer responsible for the creation of a new level of body army thats ten times more durable than Kevlar which he calls, Dragon Scale. Dragon Scale Armor has two-inch-wide circular discs that overlaps each other, creating a flexible vest that allows a good range of motion and is intended to absorb a high number of hits. The discs are composed of silicon carbide ceramic matrices and laminates, much like the larger ceramic plates found in other types of bullet resistant vests. This armor was chosen and crafted into a full body suit and mask for Michael by Melvin Murray after some of the local gangs in Textile City began to get their hands on high-powered weaponry imported overseas especially for them, these weapons were more advanced than the usual conventional weaponry common amongst most gangs so the switch from Kevlar to Dragon Scale was a major change in Michael's equipment and the fact that it was designed to exaggerate his name as the "Demon of Purgatory" makes it an even better symbol of what he stands for and what he means to the people of Textile City.
The new suit Michael wears also has gauntlets with spiked 'talons' that run along the back of the forearm. These exist purely for blocking and evading the brutal striking force that comes from most bladed weaponry likes swords and knives. As well as functioning as knuckle dusters and help cushion the blows of most of Michael's punches while at the same time being thick enough to throw the average man off-balance or even stun them for a few seconds. The talons on the back of the guantlets are used widely for breaking the blades of swords and some knives, although Michael is widely seen using them to scale most buildings by digging the talons into the side of a wall or using the talons to break his fall by using the same technique he uses to scale the wall but this usually depends on how close he is alongside the building's edge.
The final integral part to the Gargoyle suit is that it has a well hidden and disguised backpack that holds a "glider cape" to help Michael descend to lower platforms from much higher locations. The glider cape is shaped with scalloped edges to give the impression of a bat-like demon to further enforce the impression that the vigilante, Gargoyle actually is a demon lurking within the shadows of the city. The cape works by an electrical feedback that is ran through it via the gauntlets Gargoyle wears and this electrical feedback cause the cape to harden and become thick enough to soar atop the wind currents that exist upon higher altitudes. Thanks to this Michael can literally air drop onto his enemies while at the same time invoking much fear into them, which is what he wants.
Combat Stave
Michael originally went about fighting crime and the gangs of Textile City unarmed and without the use of a weapon but he later sought out Melvin Murray, the same man who designed his new Gargoyle suit and asked him if he can design a weapon that was non-lethal but could still get the job the done and also allow for quicker disposal of mobs in case he was ever cornered. Melvin designed what he called a "battle stave" which he was inspired to make off of a form of Filipino martial art style called, Eskrima. How the stave works is that it can be used dual wielded (one stick in each hand) or can be connected together to form a staff that can allow for quicker dispersal of larger groups of enemies. The stave is also modified with tasers on each Eskrima stick so that went they are connected to form the staff, it will allow for Michael to stun or hold back an enemy for at least a few seconds to allow him a quick second to breathe. The tasers can be used to stun opponents and its voltage can also be adjusted via a switch on the stave that can (when at the highest frequency) emit large bursts of electricity and even shoot small bursts of electrical blasts, although this does usually drain the staves dry and will need a total of 24 hours to recharge the lost electricity. Lastly, the stave harbors a total of eight tranquilizer darts inside them and these are only used on more stealth missions where Gargoyle can't make too much noise if he doesn't want to attract any unwanted attention.
Short Staff
This is yet another weapon crafted by Melvin Murray, the same man who designed Michael's Gargoyle suit and Combat Stave. The "short staff" as Melvin refers to it as is just like Gargoyle's Combat Stave but smaller and more compact. The short staff is different from the stave because its much lighter and can be thrown farther than Gargoyle's stave (when its not connected to form a staff). The short staff is outfitted with springs on either side so it can bounce from target to target and allow for a ricochet effect to be put in place and it also has a special kinetic energy absorption core meaning that the more targets it hits, the blunter the force of impact. There is also a dial on the short staff that can allow for it to emit electricity and shock any groups of enemies it may come to hit, which is even better for Gargoyle since his Sonar Pulse allows him to detect and "see" any source of electricity, meaning it won't be hard to find the staff after its been thrown.
Abilities
- Master Martial Artist:
Ninjutsu Mastery - Gargoyle trained with White Lotus and some of her more loyal masters who are ex-members of the clan, The Exhumed to be an adept fighter at ancient Japanese Ninjutsu. Since The Claw were founded during the early years of feudal Japan, the Ninjutsu Gargoyle would learn would be actual, real ninja-based fighting and would allow for him to at least stand a chance to The Claw in case they after found their-selves drawn to Gargoyle's presence in Textile City.
Eskrima Proficient - White Lotus and Gargoyle both trained in the Philippines, in their respective "origin" stories while go on their paths to become the people they are today. Gargoyle trained in Eskrima, and seeing how Gargoyle was ambidextrous he excelled especially in the dual-wielding component of Eskrima stick fighting. Years later Gargoyle would create his Combat Stave which was capable of breaking apart and taking the form of dual wield Eskrima sticks for in case he ever needed to take down opponents twice as fast.
Jiu-Jutsu Proficiency - Gargoyle's training extended into Jiu-Jutsu proficiency. Gargoyle is capable of overpowering most opponents with his own body weight and then holding them in a grapple strong enough they struggle to get free. This style of fighting is only utilized by Gargoyle whenever he needs to calm someone down or using a melee weapon such as a knife and he quickly needs to disarm them in some way.
Kung Fu Mastery - Gargoyle has mastered a single style of Kung Fu, focusing around counters and moving with the flow of the battle. He also learnt it from the same masters who trained White Lotus. He relies in his Mastery of Kung Fu to perform his seemingly impossible counters and manage handling multiple opponents.
Bōjutsu Proficiency - With her main weapon being a bō staff when not adopting an unarmed fighting technique, White Lotus trained Gargoyle in Bōjutsu, the martial art of using staff commonly referred to as a "bō". While he would later utilize this fighting style into his Combat Stave, Gargoyle learned how to be extremely proficient with a Bō and perform proper slashing, swinging, and stabbing techniques while being trained in the fighting style.
Intonjutsu Mastery - Gargoyle has learned and honed the proper technique of "vanishing" or "disappearing". Intonjutsu is the art of "disappearing" and has many walking and stealth techniques. It also doubles as a way of surviving when out in the wilderness and also gives the student the advantage of making their very own footsteps "inaudible", With Gargoyle first being known as the Shadow, it would be ironic for him to not know about this style of martial arts.
- Interrogation Expert: Mike, both in and out of costume is an expert interrogation expert. Mike's enhanced sensory system allows him to immediately tell weather a person is lying or not and can use master-level intimidation to strike fear into most adversaries and scare them into speaking the truth. This skill has also allowed Chris to put a lot of faith and meaning into the saying, Only the truth will set you free.
- Expert Detective: Michael's training in criminal justice and criminal psychology has allowed him to become a near-if-not-expert level detective through his sheer intellect and ever expanding knowledge of the criminal underworld through his many connections like Yulisa Garcia. His level of skill rivals that of the Textile City Police Department's and arguably in some cases, even Nightbeast's.
- Peak Human Condition: Gargoyle's powers are limited to just his sensory system and do not expand into his physical prowess, so he still can be injured and wounded by normal human means. Gargoyle is susceptible to physical injury and diseases as any other baseline human and so because of this he must use brains over brawn when facing opponents with superhuman strength or any kind of superhuman enhancements.
- Expert Tracker: Through the aid of Suffolk's enhanced senses, he has become a renown tracker relying mainly on his sense of smell, hearing, and even taste to track down missing persons or people of interest. This is later backed up by Suffolk's own Psychic Vision which acts as his own "Predator Vision" for following a person's trail
- Skilled Acrobat: Michael's agility is nowhere near-superhuman but visually looks the part, being able to dodge most kinds of gunfire even while injured, with ease. Michael cleverly makes use of his martial arts training and puts all his natural born human strength and reflexes into precise movements that allow him to be the most skilled, if not expert, acrobat known to man.
Weaknesses
- Blindness: Michael's major weakness is that he is legally blind. He can not perceive actual physical images or awareness of his surroundings. Because of this Michael is rarely seen without wearing his tinted sunglasses to mask his very dilated pupils.
- Sensory Overload: While he has lost his sight his other senses were greatly enhanced beyond normal human potential. Michael's hearing is far superior than that of a normal man's and for that his ears are also overly sensitive to loud sounds or vibrations. This obviously can result in Michael's ears or nose bleeding to even blacking out entirely.
- Pure Darkness/Zero Electrical Energy: Gargoyle's Sonar Pulse is limited by if there is any electrical stimuli in his environment that he can draw his psychic map from. If there is none then hes more or less "screwed" since he would be in total darkness.

Trivia
- Gargoyle was created as an inspiration off the Netflix series, Daredevil.
- Certain themes of Gargoyle such as magic draw from some of the supernatural elements of the CW's, 'Arrow' TV series.
- Textile City, much like Gotham City is flooded with so much despair that the Gargoyle is their beacon of hope like Superman is to Metropolis and Batman is to Gotham.
- Michael chose the guise of a gargoyle simply because gargoyles are said to frighten off and protect those that it guards. With those that he guards and protects being both Textile City, Purgatory, and the innocent people living in fear.
- Gargoyle is described as the "Evil Angel" due to that gargoyles are usually displayed as evil spirits that come to harm people, but this "Gargoyle" is a nice one come to help and protect.
- While Daredevil's powers are based around a form of human echolocation, Gargoyle's powers are more-or-less a form of electroreception, an ability found mostly among most fish species.
